The Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) carried out a series of strikes against key positions of the terrorist groups occupying the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib, Captain 1st Rank Oleg Ignasyuk, deputy chief of the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria announced on October 15.
“The VKS carried out precision strikes against the positions of illegal armed factions in the Idlib de-escalation zone,” the Russian military official said. “As a result of the strikes, three terrorist training centers, a warehouse and two workshops for manufacturing drones were destroyed.”
The strikes were carried out in order to prevent attempts by terrorist groups to attack government-held areas with drones and rockets, according to the official.
Greater Idlib includes the city center of Idlib governorate and much of its countryside as well as parts of the northern Lattakia countryside, the northwestern Hama countryside and the western countryside of Aleppo. The region is occupied by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allies.
Syrian media reported that more than 40 Russian strikes hit Greater Idlib on October 14 and 15. Video footage showing some of the recent strikes on the region were posted to social networks.
VKS warplanes carried out more strikes on Greater Idlib on October 16. Most of the strikes hit the northern Lattakia countryside and the southern Idlib countryside.
The Russian strikes come amid reports of a plan by HTS and its allies in Greater Idlib to launch a large-scale attack against the Syrian military in order to take advantage of the distraction caused by the ongoing Israeli war on both the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.
It’s worth noting that terrorists in Greater Idlib fired anti-aircraft missiles at an An-30 reconnaissance plane of the VKS on October 13. The plane was not hit however.
