A factory built by Turkey’s Baykar to produce drones for Ukraine was hit during overnight Russian missile and drone strikes, the Strana newspaper reported on August 28, citing the deputy of the Lvov City Council Igor Zinkevich.

“Last night, the Bayraktar Turkish drone factory in Kiev was hit for the fourth time in the last six months, with two strikes recorded,” Zinkevich said.

The factory was not operational, according to Zinkevich, but most of the production facilities had already been assembled.

“Two hits were recorded. The production facilities were seriously damaged. Bayraktar, despite the military actions, continued to invest tens of millions of its own funds, train personnel and prepare production. Most of the facilities were almost ready, and the main staff had completed their training,” the deputy said.

The overnight Russian strikes were among the largest to target Ukraine in recent weeks. In a statement, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that the strikes hit “enterprises of the Ukrainian defence industry and military aviation bases.”

The strikes were carried out using “long-range air-to-surface weapons, including Kinzhal hypersonic air-launched ballistic missiles, and attack unmanned aerial vehicles,” according to the ministry.

A photo posted to social networks shows fire and smoke erupting from Baykar’s factory in Ukraine amid a large blast during the strikes.

Baykar supplied dozens of Bayraktar TB2 combat drones to Ukraine before the start of the Russian special military operation in 2022. Dozens of additional drones of the same type were shipped to the country later on. In the same year, Baykar launched the construction of its factory in Ukraine. At the time, Ukrainian ambassador to Turkey Vasil Bodnar said that the factory will be operational in several months, and that the launch could happen before the end of 2023.

However, by 2023, TB2 disappeared from the battlefields, with Russian media reports suggesting more than 100 drones have already been shot down.

Later it was reported that Baykar’s factory in Ukraine will begin production in 2025. The latest strikes suggest that this wont be happening any more.
