Russian Su-34 fighter bombers have apparently begun to use an advanced electronic warfare (EW) system to jam Ukraine’s remaining air defenses.
On March 24, the TASS news agency released footage showing a formation of Su-34 fighters preparing for a combat mission over Ukrainian. One of the fighters was carrying the advanced EW system, the SAP-14, to provide protection for the formation.

The SAP-14 system primary mission is to jam advanced air defenses during ground attack missions by imitating electronic signatures of various aircraft and generating false targets within enemy sensors.
The EW system, which was developed the Kaluzhsky Scientific Research Radio-Technical Institute (KNIRTI), covers ground-to-air and air-to-air threats in the D and F bands and is deployed in one large, centerline pod.
The system was designed to be installed on a single heavy fighter, like the Su-30 or the Su-34, along with two SAP-518 jamming pods.
The Russian Aerospace Forces have apparently began using the EW system to protect fighter bomber formations supporting the ongoing special military operation in Ukraine. The system is likely being used to jam Ukraine’s remaining medium and long-range air-defense systems, like the Buk-M1 and the S-300. These systems managed to shot down a number of warplanes in the early days of the Russian operation.
The Russian military is currently working to neutralize Ukraine’s remaining air defenses. According to the most recent briefing by the Ministry of Defense of Russia, 189 Ukrainian air defense systems have been destroyed since the start of the special military operation in the country.
Russia needs to up their air defenses in territories controlled by them. the negligence shown in Berdyansk is clearly overconfidence that the territories are now safe which in in fact is not, Ukraine has plenty of soviet capable missiles left that can cause serious damage if let off guard also Let’s not forget about the US switch blade drones, they can travel up to 60km.
Large numbers of arms and volunteer soldier are flowing in from NATO. It is a “proxy war,” so to speak. It is important for the Russian army to make the most of the characteristics of its weapons and to destroy the enemy.

SU-34 armed with this SAP-14 must be flying above 4800 meters otherwise Stinger IR/UV guided manpad can still target them. Another lesson learned from this conflict: Flares is not enough to defeat heat seeking MANPAD. RuAF will be installing lots more of DIRCM pods on their helis and planes.
SU-34 armed with SAP-14 and SU-24MP can jam enemy air defenses rendering them useless, while carrying out airstrikes in support of infantry. This allows them to locate enemy radar sources and SEAD destroy them with KH-31P. Get to work RuAF :D
