Russian Su-34 Fighter Bomber Spotted Over Northern Lebanon (Video)

On May 27, a Su-34 warplane of the Russian Aerospace Force Intercepted an F-16 warplane of the Israel Air Force over the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, according to several Lebanese sources. Reportedly, the Su-34 took off from Hmeimim airbase in the Syria coast.

Lebanese sources released a video showing the Russian Su-34 flying over Tripoli. However, no Israeli F-16 was spotted. This led many observers into doubting that the Su-34 was intercepting an Israeli warplane.

Observers also noted that the Su-34 was only carrying a PTB-2000 external fuel tank, which could mean that the warplane was actually conducting a maritime patrol off the shores of Syria and Lebanon. The Su-34 may have entered the Lebanese aerospace due to the current bad weather in the area.

Russia and Israel established a de-escalation hotline between them only days after the beginning of the Russian intervention in Syria in 2015. Former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon told the Russian news outlet Sputnik on May 5 that the hotline had prevented a Russian jet that almost entered Israel’s airspace from potentially being shot down on previous occasions.

According to AMN Su-57s were used successfully, carrying airstrikes on terrorists in Hama province!

Kell

SU-34 going hunting?

Rob

Very Good Russia, not allow Israeli planes over Lebanon because Israel uses Lebanon aerospace against Syria which is a big security threat.

Serious

XD. Russia did nothing against israel. Read the article. XD.

itibi ra

Are you serious? The article is only full of conjecture and few facts, such as the facts that it was over Lebanese airspace and it had what appeared to be an external fuel tank. How do *you* know that Russia did nothing against Israhell? Do you have psychic abilities or do you work for the mossad? The mere presence of the aircraft might be enough of a warning to the Chosen Dumbs that they are getting close to being slapped hard if they continue with their tantrums. One thing is for sure, the Russians would NOT be sending a fighter jet into Lebanese airspace just for sh*ts and giggles. There IS a reason, a very good one as flying a frontline military aircraft in foreign airspace i never done lightly since it risks an international incident and puts both the pilot and aircraft at risk. You have absolutely no clue what the reason is and neither do i. You comment is also merely conjecture so stop trying to make it look like fact. It’s not. Rob’s comment was a valid point.

potcracker2588

Russia has not, and will not engage israeli air force……….period…. as to why 1(one) fuckin plane was flying over lebanese air space…….who cares…thats diddley……Israel has attacked syria over 50 times in the last 2 years….Russia saw them coming every time the minute they took off from israeli soil…….neither did russia engage with air force or with their S-300 or S-400. Woud that be sweet, the russians shooting down israeli planes? sure, and sexy too…but I seriously doubt it. But hey brother…no need for us to get cracked up on this. The truth will be seen shortly. The day when SAA attacks Daraa and surroundings. You can be sure israel and the us will help the jihadi headchoppers…..if this happens..the moment of truth for russia has come. But again….I doubt that russia will engage israeli or us planes…..should it happen….this could eventually be the start east vs west with all consequences.

Rob

In Daraa the Russian defense minister take care of SAA, Tiger forces and Russian forces. That is why the Daraa area is under strict surveillance by Russian aerospace forces to tackle with any cruise/ballistic missile from surface and air on time.

So the Daraa area is now completely sealed by the Russian aerospace forces for huge military operation in Daraa Golan Hights.

potcracker2588

i seriously hope u r right…but i still doubt it very much that russia will engage israeli or nato air force…..but hey…. Time will tell very soon bro.. and i really hope that russia stands ground

Rob

Are you trying to scare or challenge Russian forces.

MichaH

Russia has a difficult starting position, Syria is one of the most complex conflicts that may have ever happened. I think Russia is doing masterly so far. If you followed some commentary here, like shooting down israeli jets, intercept american aircraft and so on, there would be no Syrian army anymore, no Assad, Damascus in ruins, black flags everywhere, on the streets Merkavas or Abrahams on patrol…

AM Hants

You are aware that Syria is a sovereign nation, with democratically leaders? It is not part of Russia and the people did not vote to be led by President Putin. Russia was asked to lend a hand, not take over control. Would you like your invited guests to take control of your territory? President Assad, has he complained of not receiving enough help from Russia?

potcracker2588

no its not!!!!!!!!!!!!! since the illegal occupation of the golan heights with all its drink water reservoirs by the dirty jews, syria has not been a sovereign nation.and now 2017…..whats sovereign about syria???? just last week they finally after years of battle captured damascus and its surroundings back.North syria….whats sovereign there? the turkish bastardos invaded and they aint going no where.Anybody belive that turkey will leave afrin is on lsd, heroin and coke all at once. Turkey is changing the DEMOGRAPHICS right now in their occupied territory, just as the bastard nato jew slaves are doing in the east of syria.Stll dont understand….changing the demography of a part of a country means the change of the population living there…..for afrin……kurds out…syrian arabs out…..turkmen and jihadi motherfuckers in…..they take their houses, farms, and shops…..thats changing the future…and its been done in afrin and in the east of syria……in the east for instance there is a big backlash by the native population going on right now in hasaka….and they are pleading for help to the SAA. So back to that sovereign nation of syria.Yeah, its sovereign…exept for large parts in the south, large parts in the north and large parts in the east.Catch my drift bro. That was SARCASM.

S Melanson

I agree with you that violating sovereign air space is not done lightly. But I also think there are several clues that are suggestive of the Russian motives behind the incident. I discuss this in my response to Serious above and welcome your thoughts on my reasoning and conclusions.

S Melanson

I think that nothing tangible was done to Israelbut the intent may be to signal to Israel a warning. This incident follows closely Israel’s new Red Line announcement which makes me suspect the incident was intentional as a warning to Israel to back off. In international affairs, signalling other nations though cues that are understandable by the nation being targeted is common and Russia is quite good at sending a message that is by subtle means yet loud and clear.

This incident, as I see it, sends a clear message to Israel.

(1) The timing tells us it is a response to Israel having recently communicated to Russia the intention to expand intervention in Syria by redefining red lines. This connection is reinforced by the geographic location being Lebanon since actions against Syria are often carried out by Israeli warplanes operating over Lebanon.

(2) The claim that the SU-34 was intercepting an Israeli F16 over Lebanon signals Russia may intercept Israeli aircraft over Lebanon in future and the lack of an actual interception due to there’s being no F16 to intercept fits with the signaling intention. This is also why no need for air to air armaments and sending a fighter bomber instead of a dedicated air superiority fighter like the SU-35.

(3) Israel has several fighter models with the latest addition, the F-35, which has been getting a lot of media attention recently. Why was it an F-16 being intercepted and not an F-35? Remember not to long ago Syria shot down an Israeli F-16 fighter, an

Rob

Excellent

S Melanson

Thank you

Jose

“Fighters such as the F-15I strike fighter, with its high speed, altitude and payload and lack of sensitive stealth systems, would be far better suited for such combat missions. Ultimately it appears highly unlikely that the Israeli Air Force could have deployed the F-35 for combat operations, and had it done so it would have provided an invaluable opportunity for Russia and its allies to study the stealth fighter’s capabilities and risked seriously undermining the entire $1.6 trillion fighter program. The United States for its part has held its F-35 fighters back from combat missions, and while the country’s small F-22 fleet may well be expected to see a sixth generation replacement within the next two decades thousands of F-35 fighters are expected to be deployed and remain in service until 2050 – possibly longer. The risks from deploying a combat ready F-35 to a theatre such as Syria with a heavy Russian military presence therefore, for limited strike missions against relatively poorly defended Iranian assets, remains hardly worth the risk – and a choice the Israeli Air Force would have been unlikely to make. “

S Melanson

I think you misread what I meant. I do not think there was any Israeli plane being intercepted by Russia as the incident was intended to only as a signal to Israel. So What I was trying to convey was an F-16 was chosen as the alleged (imaginary) intercept target by Russia for purposes of signaling.

If it were a real incident then Israeli operational planning would come into play in deciding which type of combat aircraft would be most suitable for the mission. I agree with your astute analysis on which aircraft Israeli planners might select.

AM Hants

Remember, Syria also hit a F35, not so long ago.

Israel Hiding Its F-35 Warplane Hit By Syrian S-200 Missile?… https://www.veteranstoday.com/2017/10/18/is-israel-hiding-that-its-f-35-warplane-was-hit-by-syrian-s-200-missile/

S Melanson

Yes, but unlike the F-16 which crashed, the F-35 was allegedly only damaged, not shot down, and so was able to return to base. I am glad you brought up the F-35 incident because it adds to our understanding of the likely signalling intentions of Russia. Being an F-16 (shot down) as opposed to an F-35 (damaged) tells me Israel really pushed Putin’s buttons and not in a good way. We will have to see how this plays out in the coming weeks. Will ‘Bibi’ take this ominous signal to heart? He should IMHO.

AM Hants

I read a good article, with regards President Putin and Netanyahu and how things went on the 9 May 2018. The article mentioned that there was no press conference, after their meeting and before Lucifer flew home. So if it was amicable negotiations, that went well, why no briefings to the media? It was then followed by Israel attacking Syria, when they took out many Iranian Forces.

No doubt we will see many messages being sent.

S Melanson

No press conference is definitely a bad sign. One correction. As Lucifer is Bibi’s apprentice, it was Bibi, with Lucifer in tow, that flew home.

gustavo

We hope Russia really do something against Israel planes.

Rob

Yes Russia have sealed the air and land of Daraa for foreign terrorists to not attack it by air and surface launched cruise and ballistic missiles. Russia and Syria both now regularly watching northern parts of Palestine that Israeli squatters holding.

Serious

“Former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon told the Russian news outlet Sputnik on May 5 that the hotline had prevented a Russian jet that almost entered Israel’s airspace from potentially being shot down on previous occasions.”

That’s Putin friends. israel who shot down russian jet and Turkey who shot down russian jets. XD.

John Whitehot

“Turkey who shot down russian jets”

jets? sounds like butthurt zionist whining.

Serious

Turkey shot down a russian jet and Putin sells it S-400 so that Turkey can shot down more russian jets. XD.

Syria shot zero russian jet and gave 2 navals bases to Russia and Syria has nothing back.

It seems like it’s better not to respect Russia to get something. XD.

John Whitehot

since you admitted contradicting yourself (jets =! jet) i won’t waste another second of my life replying to creepers like you.

“It seems like it’s better not to respect Russia to get something”

zionists and creepers don’t do respect, so leave it.

Serious

Always talking about details and missing the concept. XD.

neil barron

What concept ? your empty brain is a concept.

Serious

If you don’t understand the big picture but care only about fucking details like “jet” instead of “jets”, I tthink that your brain is empty. XD.

PZIVJ

You are wrong Neil. His brain is filled with many delusions and feelings of “I have superior IQ”

gustavo

You are wrong. Russia has saved Syria from Israel-USA-NATO (ISIS-Daesh) so far, and Russia will continue helping Syria to recover its territory from terrorists. Let us see what happen with kurds (USA-puppets), Daraa (Israel terrorists), AL TAnaf (USA-terrorists) and Idbil (Turkey terrorists).

John Whitehot

maritime patrol seems strange, there are the drones and even Il-38s at latakia.

some kind of ELINT mission perhaps? the drop tank is peculiar, as these aircraft already have extreme endurance with internal fuel. buddy-buddy air refueling perhaps?

ruca

Also, SU-34 is for close air support, although super-maneuverable! A flying tank that can tap dance.

Attrition47

Perhaps the recent disclosures have a point….

John Whitehot

what disclosures?

Attrition47

The ones about stealth aircraft, S300s and this one

John Whitehot

idk if u’re being ironic, but i dnt feel having said anything particularly weird.

ruca

You didn’t. i agree it seems strange. For me it was strange that it was an SU-34 and not something like and SU-35 or SU-30. Have a great day or night.

John Whitehot

i must say i wasn’t sure it’s a su-34, it could had been a su-30. but the length of the rear “sting” seems to confirm it’s a 34.

AM Hants

Love your line ‘Flying tank that can tap dance’. It conjurs a wonderful image.

Those pods have been known to contain electronic surveillance equipment. Golan Heights is near where the SU34 was spotted.

John Whitehot

i thought that as well. closely looking the plane in the vid, it seems rather a fuel tank though. Cannot say with any certainty, again due to vid being too grainy.

John Mason

SU34 has a flight range of 4000km, no need for fuel pods flying in the Syrian/Lebanese districts.

John Whitehot

i said the same in another comment. yet the fuel tank is there. it’s recognizable from the ew pod carried in that position, which has a more slender and pointy form.

air refueling is a possibility

Until this happens the cries of ‘anti semitism’ will have the power to intimidate the minds of the ‘sheeple’

On a related story, the Turkish Airforce might switch from US F35 to Russian SU57’s, of course it’s wrong to compare water craft to an aircraft, however back in 1979, I was working at the Double Bay Whitehead Marina, the proprietor actually spent a small fortune hotting up a Mercury V8 in a Bertrum cutdown hull, along came an inspired individual with knowledge of the sport and said, “no matter what you do it’s still only one engine up against everyone else in offshored racing that has two”.

He was right of course, why the US competitor to the SU 57 has only one engine is a complete mystery, certainly invisible in the bottom line, stealth is affected a bit I’m told but not really.

Tudor Miron

F-35 rcs is a an order of magnitude larger than that of F-22 in front view and worse in other directions. As was proven over AL Bukamal Russians have no problem locating F-22s.

Wise Gandalf

As was proven over AL Bukamal Russians have no problem locating F-22s

Sure not, when americans inform Russia about their flights and russians the americans.

Rodney Loder

That article was written by a defence analysis probly working for a variety of US Gov Bodies, could be accurate sounds like the things used to detect planets in other Galaxies, I’m no expert but stealth only works 2 ways by deflection or absorption of energy waves, flat shape flying straight into radar beams with sharp angles not curved surfaces to deflect the radar beams away not back to the radar unit, and of course plastic covers to absorb radar beams.

Everything else to me is just marketing strategy, and a waste of money. Like Ronald Reagan’s Stars Wars.

Soldier awarded medal for bravery after being hit by pebble

Just days after being struck down by a pebble launched from a terrorist 12-year-old Palestinian’s catapult, inspirational IDF soldier and Israeli man, Adam Damkani, was awarded the medal for bravery.

Injured in a series of clashes at the Israeli border, which is somehow situated in the heart of Palestine, the fallen 23-year-old soldier was rushed to hospital in the hopes of not needing a stitch, where a team of medical experts helped dress his injuries with a band aid.

“When we saw the scratch on his head we just had to act immediately,” Israeli red cross member Jacob Alterman recalled, “he was visibly upset and was crying profusely, asking for his family members.

Thats called presense. Now Israels total control of this sky is over.

PZIVJ

Did this flight come after Israel stated they would extend their “redline” to the north. Indeed this may be a statement by Russia.

S Melanson

Yes it did and I think it is very much a message by Russia to Israel which is also why I doubt an actual Israeli plane was being intercepted – the incident was designed to send a particular message to Israel.

As a signal to Israel, Russia is saying it is a willing to violate Lebanese air space to intercept Israeli aircraft threatening Syria.

That the (imagined) aircraft being intercepted is an F-16 sends a stark warning to Israel since it was an F-16 that was recently shot down by Syria – Russia will resort to use of lethal force if necessary.

Bibi must have pissed off Putin big time.

SPECIAL SERVICE’S AGENT: ATTACK ON RUSSIA IS BEING PREPARED

Sources in the Russian law enforcement agencies, citing data from closed communication channels with the Defense Ministries of China, Pakistan and Afghanistan, say that the operation to prepare a large-scale hybrid offensive against Russia through Tajikistan and Uzbekistan is in the final phase.

…………………. According to Russian intelligence agencies, at the moment the combat potential of the Islamic State ranges from 2500 to 4000 people. This is also confirmed by sources from the Ministry of Defense of China. The Chinese military claims at least 3,800 militants operating in 160 terrorist cells.

madashellron

Don’t ya think. It’s time for Russia to sign a defense pac with Lebanon. The country really needs Russia to patrol the skies of Lebanon. This might help keep the Empires of Chaos at bay, especially Israel.

Smaug

Not all the Lebanese would want to as some communities would fear Assad and Moscow more than they do Israel (mainly non-Muslim towns in northern Lebanon). Lebanon is in a state of internal war, with many factions squabbling over everything. Keep in mind that Hezbollah was given veto power in parliament to avert an armed voup and/or civil war. Also the war weary Russians would not be so gun ho about even more foreign commitments, especially one that puts them even more at odds with NATO than they already are. The Russians are aiming to prevent a war with Israel, not start one.

pjt

Russia should be flying combat ready fighters over Lebanon 24/7 to protect Syria.

‘Potentially’ is one thing and ‘Shoot’ is another.

Jason Tribolini

Looks to me like it is carrying a hypersonic anti-ship missile.

Smaug

Russia is aserting its presence, trying to deter Israel from exploiting the weak point in Assad’s air defenses again. Due to the lack of any Lebanese response, however, it is apparent that they are unable to prevent anyone from violating their air space due to their internal war.

RichardD

It looks like it is loaded with a large missile under the fuselage.
