A Russian fifth-generation Su-57 fighter jet carried out strikes on militant targets in Syria in February 2018, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu announced on May 25.

According to Shoigu, the Su-57 fighter jet used advanced air-launched cruise missiles to target militants.

A video of the launch can be seen at 5:32-5:51:

SF recalls that two Su-57 fighter jets were temporarily deployed in Syria in February 2018 where they passed combat tests.

“Cruise missiles”??………..what model???…….

neil barron

Why are you asking us ? We all are just learning of this ask the Russians logical.

alejandro casalegno

Neil. I doubt it……a guided missile of course, but a “Cruise”??…a Kalibr???

Dr. Pro Liv

Could be Brahmos, (in Russia Onyx-Yakhont ) known as anti-ship missiles but can be used as air to surface for ground targets also. Russia did the upgrade on Indian SU-30MKI to carry Brahmos so it would be not surprise that they have that capability included on SU-57 Or the Kh-38M air-to-surface missile

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BrahMos https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kh-38

John Whitehot

it’s not the bramhos neither the kh-38 as those models don’t have wings.

this missile is more consistent with an evolution of the Kh-101s employed by Blackjacks and Bears, or alternatively, an air launched version of the Kalibr.

Dr. Pro Liv

Haven’t seen video actually, i’ll do it now

Yeah it could be shorter range Kh-101s version adapted to SU-57 or new air to surface Kalibr Thanks on comment

Dr. Pro Liv

If missile we are talking about was that red one in video with Shoigu..I didn’t see any wings there…

John Whitehot

https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/fd6f66e504e1a92b06284067e7df25cae7f208e33b1137cde579d48456db1395.jpg

“I didn’t see any wings there”

Kinda hard to miss those. Anyway, it’s likely a Kh59MK2, a stealthy cruise missile with several guidance options

Dr. Pro Liv

Now that is interesting information Thanks

Extreme_One

Stop fighting =) They used a Kh-59MK2.

John Whitehot

i thought that as well, but i’m kinda dubious about the tail control surfaces. The red missile appear to have somehow larger ones than the 59mk2 (see pic)

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d8/Kh-59MK2_missile_at_MAKS-2015_02.jpg

Extreme_One

It’s on several news websites. Will soon be on Kh-59 wikipedia as well so… Can’t really see the tail fans in the video. The wing can be seen and the size is correct.

It was obvious. It couldnt not be a Kalibr, Brahmos, Kh-80 or Kh-55 variants(Kh-555, Kh-101) due to their large size which would have been visible in the video. Thats all the cruise missiles I know they have. The air launched Kalibr is kinda small, about 6 meters but that one is in a container when it’s airdropped. Russian military from what we know doesnt own any Brahmos anyways. It could have been a converted anti-ship cruise missile. P-800 Oniks, Kh-32, Kh-90 and 3M-51 Alfa are all too long for Su-57. Kh-47M2 Kinzhal looks different and would have had a higher speed on the video.

Leaves us with Kh-35 which has the right length but doesnt have a wing like in the video https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/4a/Kh-35E_maq_maks2009.jpg/1920px-Kh-35E_maq_maks2009.jpg

Leaves us with the Kh-59MK2.

John Whitehot

“The air launched Kalibr is kinda small, about 6 meters but that one is in a container when it’s airdropped”

negative. It’s in a container when launched from certain ships.

quote wikipedia: “In MAKS 2007, the 3M-54AE was placed beside a Su-35. This means the plane will have the ability to launch the Club-A variants. The lighter 3M-14AE was also beside MiG-35.”

If the MiG35 is able to launch a Klub/kalibr variant, so is the SU-57.

In addition, you can reason by exclusion, but if there is a new, undocumented model you will make wrong assumption.

I’m not saying that is not a kh59mk2, but that there’s an high level of uncertainty.

Extreme_One

“The air launched version is held in a container that is dropped as the missile launches, detaching from the container.” Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3M-54_Kalibr It was launched from the internal bay. As I said it’s posted on several military sites already.

(The below I write because YOU got personal. You avoided the subject of discussion like an amateur online and started to talk about me. ) > I dont see any reason to discuss with you further. You seem irritated. You haven’t provided anything correct or even interesting. And you knowledge level is light years from me.

Have a nice day!

John Whitehot

bullshit and semantics.

I interpreted the word “container” as one of those boxy, rectangular shaped, colored metal boxes used to transport stuff.

The interpretation was owed to the fact that the missile can be transported and launched from such contraptions, if transported by cargo ships, making it a sort of surprise weapon.

here’s a pic of the land attack version in its “container” http://www.ausairpower.net/V-MF/3M14AE-Sizzler-Air-Launch-1S.jpg

“YOU got personal. You avoided the subject of discussion like an amateur online”

I didn’t go personal. It’s rather difficult when you have to deal with a single fool taking up hundreds of names trying to make you appear “unknowleadgeable”. I mean, one must have issues, or be one f those jews, to take an attempt at arguing some of his points as an offence.

“And you knowledge level is light years from me”

coming from someone that upvotes his own comments (which by the way doesn’t make you another person), that would be right, in the sense that you need some tens of years to be able to get to my level (i’m just fucking around ironically).

It’s not me that derails the discussion to “personal”, since i am not the ziotroll who’s under orders to hide the truth at all costs.

that said, technically speaking i didn’t argue that “you are wrong”, but that there isn’t any certainty about the device being 59mk2.

“Have a nice day!”

#$@#@$(!&#$$

edit: the correct word is “canister”. not “container”.

Dr. Pro. Liv.

“Russian military from what we know doesnt own any Brahmos anyways. ”

What makes you say that? How can you be so sure?! They can put all Brahmos advancements in Yakhont-Onyx but still that doesn’t mean that they are not willing to have few original Brahmos for testing purposes themselves… ( I’m not saying that missile on the video is Brahmos )

Jesus

Great news, all the naysayers saying Suk57 was not operational, they’re full of MSM garbage. The weapon used was possibly KH 38M.

John Whitehot

kh-38m doesn’t have wings and it’s not a cruise missile. this one is clearly a longer ranged cruise msl.

Jesus

I did not watch the whole video, where have you found the specs or image of the weapon fired?

John Whitehot

i didn’t search any spec, i don’t need them to recognize the general category to which the weapon pertains. The Kh38 would ignite a solid rocket and fly away at speed. This is a cruise missile.

John Whitehot

btw, we know that the SU-27 series can carry the Kh-41, which is 9+ meters long, on the centerline pylon.

The su-57 though, has two weapon bays in that position. Although it would be unlikely to mount a long missile externally in such configuration, it can’t be ruled out completely. especially for testing purposes, some device could be engineered to launch the weapon in those conditions.

it makes sense tactically: the VKS would be able to launch stand off attacks with basically no probability of early detection.

When heavy bombers like Tu95s and 160 take off, it’s difficult to hide them, even thousands of KMs away, and may put a possible adversary on guard.

Su-57 can’t be detected from that distance, they would launch their cruise missiles probably from Russian or international airspace and then land before the missiles reached their targets.

This method, as a doctrinal element, would put much pressure on regional powers apt to militarly challenge Russia’s policy in Syria or elsewhere.

Jesus

Considering that Suk 57 is a fifth generation aircraft, I would test the aircraft in its stealth mode using weapons designed specifically for it. Stealth is intended to sneak on enemy defenses and deliver surgical payloads without much warnings; I do not think that US has ground based radar that could detect stealth; hanging a big cruise missile on a stealth aircraft reduces its stealth factor. It is possible that some hypersonic missiles that would fit the internal bay could be in the works, that would make detectability of the aircraft and hypersonic delivery from 50-100 miles a deadly combination. Maybe a mini Khinzhal. The two weapon bays are tandem, so it is possible to utilize the two weapon bays as one large one deploying a large cruise missile or even a Khinzhal hypersonic missile.

John Whitehot

yeah i agree with you in general.

but the two weapon bays are separated as seen in this pic http://themoscowtimes.com/static/uploads/publications/2018/5/9/aa4765dd58ea4cb7be4f7ad3c4b88c31.jpg

my point was based on the fact that the cruise missiles are stealth as well, so if we consider the large distances involved (1000+ kilometers), the presence of one of them under the aircraft does not change the detection probability by any considerable factor.

Although based on some possible tactical fundaments, it’s speculation anyway.

Jesus

Ok, aerodynamically an external cruise missile will not be that noticeable from 1000kms away, for that matter they could hang. Khinzhal hypersonic missile externally. When I stated that the two weapons bay were in tandem formation, I was under the impression they were arranged in a linear pattern, since the jet is almost 20meters long. If they are linear the space for the two bays can be engineered to become one bay accommodating a larger weapon.

Sebastian Vicente

Vectorial not wings, but is short range cruise missile.

John Whitehot

negative.

kh38 has no element of cruise missiles.

no wings. no sustaining liquid fuel engine. no preplanned flight trajectory.

“Vectorial not wings”

Never heard or read “Vectorial” about control surfaces. The only thing that can relate to the word is reactive gas systems, which are not found on the Kh38.

In case you don’t know what wings are, they are aerodynamic surfaces designed to make objects with positive speeds fly.

The Kh38 has no wings -it has control surfaces. Those are “winglets” that generate just enough lift to steer and stabilize the missile. But they don’t keep the missile in the air – that is the basic difference with “cruise missiles”

Sebastian Vicente

right, the stabilization, sustentation, not for maneuvres, then is like the HARM, Orbital or something. How do you make turn a missile without flaps Mr? Agree and before I Said is short range antiradiation with passive seeker, with extended range in the E version. But all the missiles can´t not use flaps, or rudder in tail, because the high velocity. The advanced ones use the vectorial engines.

John Whitehot

Have a nice day.

Pogroms have been a form of pest control for millennia :)

FlorianGeyer

You are a ‘ fish ‘.

Bob

How’s the weather and pay in Tel Aviv?

v76

Like you said, you have an extremely limited knowledge of …. everything… your merikan education if you finished it would put you well behind people of Estonia… you dumb as fuck merika.

HardHawk

a hasbara tool never confuse anythign. IT, post exactly what is instructed other wise dont receive his dosage for the day.

Dr. Pro Liv

F-35 “Flying Brick” is the “terror” of the sky When one removes all that Nintendo game electronic gadgets from F-35…. all you have left is flying coffin TOO EASY TO SHOOT DOWN !

Cicada 3301

whatever if that makes tou sleep at night….

Dr. Pro Liv

Just bring it on you Latino US fart ! Why don’t you send some to Russians in Syria to test S-400

Cicada 3301

american jets are flying in syria all the time where are the trashy s 400?

Dr. Pro Liv

So where are they finally? Why are they on the WRONG side of the river?! They are too scared to come closer ONLY BECAUSE Russians have forbidden to them to go on the other side ! You MUST NOT BE SCARED !

Cicada 3301

thats why the decimated 200 russian soldiers in deir ez zor with no retaliation ? :D

Dr. Pro Liv

yeah Russian “Black Water” is not Russsian army they do that for money only.. Well US….they didn’t fly on the Russian side being to scared and all…

and you are still too scared….not good all that

Cicada 3301

pathetic attempt to hide the fact that russians are afraid to retaliate

John Whitehot

eat shit like never before.

FlorianGeyer

You are wrong Cicada. The US lashes out like a spoilt child.

Russia disciplines the US children when it is appropriate to do so.

Bob

This troll has changed his avatar name from cicada 13-something to baron von donkeybanger in last two days. Troll confirmed.

FlorianGeyer

Well spotted Bob.

Sebastian Vicente

I think they avoid escalation, but is a mistake give the russian systems the signature of the F-35 (Visual, acoustic, radar, optronic). USA must ask Israel do not use the plane, if is the case. Besides imagine a mechanical trouble .

Manuel Flores Escobar

what about US backed boys?…lets them to cross Eufrates river..then Russian air force will crush them like they did in Al Tanf where FSA attempted to go towards Damascus-Qalamoun and RUAF crushed them!…thats why they only remain there like camels!

John Whitehot

besides that they said “mercenaries” and not soldiers, you must have failed to notice that it’s only mike pompeo and the nyt that have said that, no proof as usual.

Sebastian Vicente

Be Carefull with angle of incidence in a over saturated electronic (radar) enviroment, the F-35 is not the magnificent f-22. I´m on based in a USAF report. The F-22 the best of the best is another thing.

OpenNewPage

One can see you have only experienced video games, but in real life the winner is the one, who has patience, not parading his best surprises. US already lost to a bicycle army in Vietnam and is now facing for the first time equal or even more advanced technologies from Russia and China, so shut up you kid and wait and see.

v76

Comment translation:

“I’m a pathetic little 14 year old bitch with extremely limited knowledge and just regurgitate shit cnn told me REEEEEEEE”

grumpy_carpenter

Passively tracking them soaking up elint. S-400 is there to defend Russian military assets not the Syrians or Iranians. They won’t turn on their targeting radars unless they intend to shoot to kill.

The USA and Israel are happy to expose their aircraft to Russian sensors ….. I don’t know why they are offering up such gifts to the Russians when they could be using 4 th gen aircraft but they are. Maybe the Israeli’s have been spooked by Syrian air defences and feel they need to use F-35’s and F-22’s?

The Russians have been diciplined enough to only use passive radar on the US / Israeli aircraft. I guess they just don’t want to return the favour.

HardHawk

latino?

R u sure?

Dr. Pro Liv

well he didn’t say no did he? many Latino’s are in US army for green card

HardHawk

true but a child created in a sewer pipe you think is able to deny or agree? If you notice is kind of ………..off tune.

Dr. Pro Liv

are you into chivalry lessons now? I do not expect that it is written in “BOT’s CODE of CONDUCT”…do you?

HardHawk

far from it. Just stating the obvious he is mentally challenged paid per post troll. Paid trolls always write what are instructed to and never are very bright or have any debth into what they post.

frankly

Also a lot of ‘criminals’ plea bargain to avoid jail.

Dr. Pro. Liv.

crime pays….US army…salary

JustPassingThrough

here’s all you need to know about cicadas

“Cicadas have prominent eyes set wide apart, short antennae, and membranous front wings. They have an exceptionally loud song, produced not by stridulation, but by vibrating drumlike tymbals rapidly. They typically live in trees, feeding on sap and laying their eggs in a slit in the bark. The periodic cicadas spend most of their lives as underground nymphs, emerging only after 13 or 17 years, The annual cicadas are species that emerge every year. Though these cicada have life cycles that can vary from one to nine or more years as underground larvae.”

just a bug, no brains, no balls, all noise.

HardHawk

and I was thinking is just a mentally challenged hasbara, desperate for his daily dosage.

Bob

This troll has changed his avatar name from cicada 13-something to baron von donkey in last two days. Troll confirmed.

frankly

Actually using them is an obvious PR failure, the only customers now, buy them at gunpoint.

Dr. Pro. Liv.

“buy them at gunpoint” at gunpoint having their children, family… even their dog and mistress….

frankly

Yes the old buy or else plan.

frankly

You get paid for these snappy comebacks? If that’s all you got better to not say anything, you just look even stupider than your original comment.

Nigel Maund

Not if your banging donkeys!…….but it takes all types to make a world I guess!

Baron Von DonkeyBanger

everything that breaths is beatiful

frankly

You overlook the absolute, perfect, accomplishment of its primary mission,,,.. Fleecing the tax paying public.

Dr. Pro. Liv.

Of course. and that must be only TRUE “stealth capability” that airplane has. To remove money from tax payers pockets without being seen !

frankly

Wow that really nails it! So even when it utterly fails, it totally wins!

Dr. Pro. Liv.

That is his charming side…Every way you turn it…. you lose. You thinks plane is lemon while you do not know that in Pentagon and Lockheed Martin everybody drinks lemonade….

Bob

Cicada junk, without wings.

Cicada 3301

u mad?

Sebastian Vicente

The F-35 is visible with IRST/FLIR, and doesnt´have the brilliant set of pasive sensors what the F-22 has. I don´t think is bad aircraft but must be not be exposed, multimillonary sales depends (to another countries) of the perfomance.

Bob

You changed your avatar name, from Cicada 13-something or other with black image of cicada. So who will you be in two days time?

Baron Von DonkeyBanger

my next name wull he bob banger

Bob

Hopeless Troll would be far more accurate avatar for you.

Baron Von DonkeyBanger

Sure, Baron von Troll-Sham.

Baron Von DonkeyBanger

Harder troll, you got to work harder to earn your shekels. Gaz bills are rising rapidly.

You, little ukro that betreyed your own kind (we’re one nation whatever your new masters may tell you) can’t talk junk, no junk or whatever. You’re only loosing any possibility to invent, develop and produce anything more than neonazism and cheap prostitution. Show us something that is not based on CCCP foundations. Darn! How could you be so stupid to not realise that west is simply abusing you in the worst possible way? How does it feel being a whore?

HighLord Gaz

stupid Murican twat….

Cicada 3301

proud to be westerner the zionist axis will rule the world.

Nigel Maund

Highly educated comment by a military aeronautical engineer and designer?……………I don’t think!

Bob

And you have yet a new avatar name this week – cicada 13, Baron Donkey, Baron Mule, Obscure Shadow – all you – except you are not that obscure or in the shadows at all, quite the opposite. Rename yourself Incompetent Troll.

frankly

It’s all fine and dandy on the drawing board, real world testing is essential. Had some experience of a certain helicopter that did a very inappropriate thing when a volley of missiles was fired. Perhaps it was a cruise missile, now they know they can.

Attrition47

Did it turn upside down? ;O)

frankly

Pretty sure signed some papers that if I discus it, what should of happened to Killary, will happen to me.

Assad must stay (gr8rambino)

very fucken nice!!! :)))

Bobby Twoshoes

If they really want to sell more Su-57s Russia should take out some Israeli F-35s.

Daniel Miller

……the SU-57 is not for sale

Bobby Twoshoes

Not yet… I admit it wasn’t my greatest comment, I’m fully aware of the many reasons that’s a bad idea at the moment but I would still like to see some more Israeli planes downed nonetheless.

Daniel Miller

They are still working on a export model of the SU57 so yea.

Bobby Twoshoes

That implies they’re intending to export it so yea.

Joe Dirt

You can sell something that no one wants

Bobby Twoshoes

Fuck off peasant.

Liberty57

How about striking the NATO NAZI Militants as well, WIpe them out now, while you have a chance BUT, side step the Nato member issue by training Syrian Airforce and give them the planes If the Syrias wipe out NAZI NATO Coalition of slaves, then NATO cannot blame Russia for it and cant start ww3 but Syria can still wipe them out… Its a plan
