Russian T-72B3 Tank Survived Three Missile Hits On Donbass Frontline (Photos)

Illustrative Image

On April 16, Russian sources shared photos showing a T-72B3 obr.2016 battle tank of the Russian Armed Forces that survived at least three hits with anti-tank guided missiles while operating against Ukrainian forces in the Donbass region.

The battle tank was reportedly targeted with US-made FGM-148 Javelin and British-made NLAW anti-tank missiles while operating to the south of the city of Izyum. The missiles failed to kill the tank, which remained in an operational condition. The tank crew were not harmed.

The Javelin, which is guided by infrared homing, has a maximum range of 2,500 meters and can penetrate up to 600 mm of rolled homogeneous armour behind reactive armour. The missile has top-attack as well as fire-and-forget capabilities.

The NLAW [Next generation Light Anti-tank Weapon] is guided by PLOS [predicted line of sight] with a fire-and-forget capability. The missile has a range of 1,000 meters only and can penetrate more than 500 mm of rolled homogeneous armour.

The T-72B3 obr.2016 is equipped with the Relikt 3rd generation reactive armour, which was apparently able to protect in this case. The Russian reactive armour is claimed to be twice as effective as the Soviet-era Kontakt-5

Developed by NII Stali, Relikt uses a completely new composition of explosives to achieve dynamics protection. Unlike older reactive amours, it works equally reliably against both low-velocity and high-velocity missiles, doubling protection against shaped charges and increasing anti-tank guided missile protection by 50 percent.

It’s worth noting that Kiev forces have received thousands of Javelin and NLAW missiles from the US, the UK and several other NATO states since the beginning of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine.

imagine what a tank could survive that was not 40 years old? T90ms? I am undecided? Old tanks versus new? The ATM are so effective does it matter? Might as well put the money else where and use t62? Or do you buy new tanks ?

Best to buy a lot of Toyota’s. THE way to beat these 100.000 dollar ATGM’s is by using cheaper vehicles

Rasputin

Doesn’t look like the tank was hit by an ATGM a bullet hole, and some damage from driving through a brick house.

Western weapons are crap.

Kremlbotovich

T-90M has indeed good passive and active protection, and the Relikt armour is on top of its turret and seamless. So Javelins would need to hit the same spot twice, if not thrice to take it out. Javelins are overhyped, I would be more worried about the conventional anti-tank grenades.

kymsheba

The T90 has laser warning system which not only alerts the crew they have been targeted and which direction but when they turn their turret to threat the laser warning system also screws up the guidance of the anti-tank missile which causes it to lose its tracking. – Z –

Ace

Thanks. I hope degrading the threat doesn’t depend on the slow rotation of the turret. Surely the laser warning system is independent of the turret.

RealityOfWar

It’s not really the tank age that is dominant, the reactive armour plays a huge part in influencing the outcome. That is why NATO are fitting their standard armour to old tanks being supplied to Ukraine. The reactive armour is the thing that tries to prevent penetration into the core of the tank. We see all types of techniques with armour based on trying to rapidly create a greater distance of required penetration or splintering ceramics to deflect liquid molten injection.

CCAUS

The tank is obr 2016 not 40 years old. The T90 is actually a t72 variant as well. I’d say this probably is around similar to the T90. They seem to imply their new ERA protection saved them and that would make sense.

hans raus

Sheer luck and also shitty missile operators.

Also the hit from the Panzerfaust 60 fired by the Panzerknacker Batalion of the Ukrainian Folkssturm Brigade.

But they did attack with Switchblade yesterday and failed. Joke on you.

Moskva Submarine

And it ricocheted into Maskva. It better killed the tank

jens holm

No, it ricocheted into you anus.

you lost.

Ghost of Snake Island

Switchblades are apparently driven by software, and also can’t distinguish between civilians or military, so they’ll just end up killing civies 95% of the time(not that Ukraine has an issue with that). Either way so far they have a 0% killrate so obviously the software is dogshit and those drones don’t work as advertised. More NATO garbage produced by companies who will be subsidized as a money laundering scheme no matter how many dysfunctional products they put out.

Johan

Exactly 50 year old, all money for new tanks waisted on the officers and Kremln nomenklatura

General (Posthumous) M'quve

In fact, the B3 refit confers to the tank an excellent level of protection against KE projectiles, actually exceeding that of Western AFVs. In comparison to the latest T-90 models, it just lacks active protection systems such as “Shtora”, which is of course beneficial against ATGMs, but still far from invincible. The point, like said elsewhere, is that aspect and angle of impact are what really matters. Any modern tank can be defeated by RPG or recoilless rifle from the ’50, in some cases (it happened in Iraq, for example).

Slobodan

Not true. T-90 has far better armor protection.

ATLGA

Agreed, T72B3 can only be compared as a souped up version of an Abrams. Nazi trolls will be seething mad but the Houthis blow up Abrams with large fireworks in Yemen, they giggle about them and the Patriot batteries.

Kremlbotovich

A tank without active defence nowadays is indeed a steel coffin that rides. Herp derp Abrams is the best tank in the world, USA! USA! Not if it doesn’t have ERA it isn’t.

I never drank often, until about a year ago when I stumbled on some brandy that I like a lot, and I’ve slowly gotten plowed almost every afternoon ever since over a game of chess against a chess machine. I like chess, but it comes with competitive anxiety which the brandy takes away, because I’m just trying to have fun. And I’ve never had so much fun.

Then on to making a huge dinner for the household with pigout and gorging, followed immediately with a missile-like dive into the sack for a long nap.

Just fucking awesome! Slava Russia!

They should slightly transform the great T72 as a perfect amphibian version to easily replace the cruiser Moskva (rest in peace)!

Or even better, with few minor changes having a flying T72 version acting as a long range cruise missile destroying the whole western corrupted world and Nazi Ukraine and NATO.

The T72 is really a game changer.

What kind of completely and absolutely retarded imbecile actually believes that any of these “intercepted calls” are real? Two Ukros talking with themselves. Shittiest level of propaganda, perfect for British toilet papers tabloids.

Muhammad your Prophet

The completely and absolutely retarded inbecile Russians destroyed all the 3g and 4g towers inside Ukraine at the start of the war and now they’ve been forced to communicate through open channels. Every single conversation they make gets intercepted. The Putin cockroaches are the biggest idiots on Earth.

hans raus

Yes, every army totally depends on civilian mobile phone towers in a hostile country and have no other means of communication! I saw this in some Disney movie and it makes sense. But only if you are IQ 1-9 like you.

Muhammad your Prophet

That’s exactly how moronic the Russian army is. Not much intel to gather. They’re handing it on a golden platter. Perfect description.

Imagine believing in “intercepted conversations” in 2022. Dummy.

Muhammad your Prophet

Imagine asking your Russian girlfriend permission on the phone to rape Ukranian women. That’s just grotesque. How can you even live with yourself, you filthy puke?

RealityOfWar

These missiles have huge problems when not used in the right environment. Indeed NLAW because of its range restrictions is pretty useless in a battlefield scenario, indeed the facts are that it generally gets used for other purposes other than tank killing. There are very few tank kills recorded against it. It’s a cheap and cheerful weapon that has its purposes, but that ain’t killing tanks! For Javelin, it’s a far more useful weapon, with a much higher price tag – like 10 times more expensive. But again it is oversold as a tank killer, but can do the job, if it gets the contact right and can defeat the reactive armour. Again Javelins find other uses. The bottom line is that Ukraine has zero capability to take and hold territory at the moment with the kit it has!

CNN today…..Ukraine running out of ammunition………..

7 hr 35 min ago Concern is growing over Ukraine’s ammunition inventory, according to US official From CNN’s Barbara Starr

There is growing concern about the need to get more ammunition — and in particular artillery ammunition — to Ukrainian forces more rapidly as heavy ground combat against Russian units is expected to unfold in the coming days, according to a US official.

While the United States is shipping 18 155mm towed howitzers and 40,000 artillery rounds to Ukraine as part of the new security assistance announced by President Joe Biden’s administration this week, even that amount could be expended within several days, raising the prospect of Ukraine forces running out of ammunition, the official said.

During some of the heavy earlier fighting, Ukrainian forces fired up to thousands of artillery rounds in a given day, the official noted.

Going forward, the US believes the likely Russia strategy is to move weapons and troops into eastern Ukraine from their current positions just north, and then encircle and cut off Ukraine forces that are there, the official said.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley are conducting daily phone calls with counterparts in the region to encourage them to ship more weapons and supplies to Ukraine as soon as possible.

Earlier this week, the Pentagon hosted the CEOs of the military’s eight largest prime contractors to figure out how to arm Ukraine faster.

The roundtable discussion, led by Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks, focused on the Pentagon’s objectives to keep supplying Ukraine with arms while also being able to maintain the readiness of US forces and support the defense of allies.

The whole military supply line down to fuel needs to be prioritized as targets. This is critical.

North south transport corridor also should be patrolled by air and hit.

“The T-72B3 obr.2016 is equipped with the Relikt 3rd generation reactive armour” – yes, but only on the sides. I think, and correct me if I’m wrong, but with Relikt you can not penetrate a T-72B3 obr. 2016 with any kinetic round, not with one single shot, that is.
