On April 3, the Russian military shot down a helicopter of Kiev forces between the settlements of Artemovsk, also known as Bakhmut, and Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk direction.
Video footage showing the wreckage of the helicopter burning was posted to social media. While some Russian news sources said that the helicopter was a Mi-24 gunship, others identified it as one of the modernized Mi-35s recently donated to Ukraine by the Czech Republic.
It is still unclear how the helicopter was shot down. The most likely possibility is that it was targeted with a man-portable air defense system. The fate of the crew remains unknown.
The Russian military has been advancing from its positions in Artemovsk in the direction of Chasiv Yar, a key stronghold of Kiev forces in the Donetsk direction, for the last few days. The settlement is reportedly about to be stormed by Russian troops, who are currently situated just a few hundred meters away.
More than 40 Mi-24/35 gunship helicopters are currently in service with Kiev forces. Many of these helicopters were delivered to Ukraine after the start of the Russian special military operation some two years ago, by the Czech Republic, Poland and North Macedonia.
In recent weeks, Kiev forces lost several helicopters to Russian fires. At least two of them were struck on the ground at a makeshift airfield in the Donetsk direction with precision-guided missiles in mid-March.
Despite receiving much support from its allies, Ukraine’s aerial capabilities remain largely ineffective in the face of the Russian military.
