Mariupol
Units of the Russian Armed Forces, the Donetsk People’s Republics and the Lugansk People’s Republics have been developing the military operation in Ukraine. As of April 9, the most intense fighting is ongoing in Donetsk and Lugansk Regions as well as in the south of Kharkiv Region in the east of Ukraine.
In Mariupol, units of the Russian Armed Forces and the DPR enter the port area of the city. Some sources claim that they have already established control of most of the port area. Intense fighting is still ongoing in the vicinity of Azovstal Plant. However, the plant itself still remains the stronghold of Kyiv’s forces, including members of the notorious Azov Battalion.
Servicemen of Russia and the DPR continue to evacuate civilians from the city of Mariupol. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, during the day more than 80 civilians, including 14 children, were taken out of the basements of residential buildings located near the contact line. Russian-led forces use armoured vehicles to evacuate civilians.
The Russian Defense Ministry added that in the evening of April 8, the Kiev government made a new unsuccessful attempt to evacuate the “leaders of the Ukrainian Nazis” from Mariupol by sea. The Ukrainian dry cargo vessel “Apache” (assigned to the Maltese port of Valletta, under the Maltese flag) that was involved in this attempt was detained by Russian forces.
DPR units with the support from the Russian armed Forces are also involved in positional clashes near Maryinka and Avdiivka. Nonetheless, no notable gains were reported there. Both areas are well-fortified and used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces as strong points to slow down the advance of DPR in the region.

Meanwhile, LPR troops have been working to expand their foothold in the area of Popasnaya. The town itself and its surroundings are the contested area.
To the north of Popasnaya, in the countryside of the Severodonetsk-Lysichansk agglomeration LPR and Russian units carry out intense strikes on positions of Kyiv’s forces. Sporadic clashes also were reported in the vicinity of the nearby town of Rubezhnoe.
An intense fighting is also ongoing in the area to the south of the town of Izum (south of Kharkiv Region), which has been recently came under control of the Russian military. According to reports, forward units of the Russian Armed Forces already reached the countryside of the towns of Slovyansk and Kramatorks. However, the situation in the area remains unclear and the storm of these strongholds of Kyiv’s forces is not likely in the coming days.
The Russian side reported that during the day, the Russian airpower hit 65 military facilities of Ukraine. These targets included four command posts and communication centers, three warehouses for logistics, as well as 41 strong points and areas of concentration of Ukrainian military equipment.

At the same time. Russian air defense systems shot down three Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles in the air: two – in the areas of the settlements of Mariupol and Kalininskoe, another one – “Bayraktar TB-2” – in the area of the settlement of Sakhnovshchina.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, since the beginning of the military operation, Russian forces have destroyed 127 Ukrainian aircraft, 98 helicopters, 428 unmanned aerial vehicles, 2037 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, 229 multiple rocket launchers, 886 field artillery guns and mortars, as well as 1941 units of special military vehicles.

Pushing is good, having the troops to hold conquered ground has been the problem. Having rotations of units so you can rest and refit is needed. Having a reserve that can flexible and opportunistically attack is good.

400.000 is too much. Kyiv has in Eastern Ukraine cca 40-50.000 solders who can’t leave trenches otherwise they will be destroyed by Russian air forces. Practically they don’t have possibility to maneuver. No help from Western Ukraine will come since Russians already squashed attempt by Nazi regime to transfer some units from Kyiv towards East. Also adding that they are don’t have so much reserves of fuel and food. Russians will simply close circle going from some point between Donetsk and Gulyaypole towards Izyum on the North. After that it will be slow and agonizing death for Nazi idiots still believing some help will come from NATO.

Better to be careful, because things often don’t play out as expected. Future will tell who this war plays out. Given huge losses of military infrastructure, I expect serious problems to supply for the AFU units. However, they keep shelling civilians in Donbass at a rate of 100 – 300 shells a day.
All they can do is to use trenches and bunkers they dug out and fortified in last 8 years. I would expect all line from Marinka up to Popasnaya is very well fortified. That’s why main attack will come from behind, from direction of Izjum on north, and from Zaporizye / DPR border area in the south. If successful, Russia will effectively seal cauldron in Kramatorsk – Sloviansk area (DPR), but also effectively encircle big cities of Dnipro and Zaporizhya on west side. Those cities are both on the Dniepr river so it will not be perfect encirclement, but it will be enough to completely block parts east of the river. After this, the painful part starts, since i’m afraid more of those cities will have to go through long siege and sweeping proccess.
At least the Ukraine forces don’t have to dig graves for their dead soldiers. The trenches they currently hide in will suffice as graves for them all. 😂🤣

Nikolaev is the key city. I’m more disappointed with withdrawal there than in the entire north. After Kherson fell Ukros realized Nikolaev was crucial to the entire south-west front. And they brought significant reinforcements, unlike Russians.
No, Russians have considerable forces in and around Kherson. At least 5 divisions and a brigade. I have no idea why there were withdrawn though. I think it was important to keep pressure on Nikolaev, which has taken considerable losses, so much so that they were scrounging around other settlements conscripting Volksstrum.

After Mariupol falls
I hear what you are saying, Marius, but as the pressure now is off around Kiev, for the usurpers of Ukraine, I feel it would be a major mistake to allow the ukrop soldiers to solidify their positions in the south when there is an opportunity now to block them from even getting to Odessa. If it is possible to by-pass Nikolaev and other minor cities, now is the time to do this — if not we will have many minor Mariupol scenarios in front of us to our road to victory.
I agree it mustn’t be allowed them to solidify their positions in the south even further. Unfortunately, Nikolaev can’t be bypassed, just look at the map: it must be taken before moving to Odessa. Impossible to go south of the city because there is a river/huge water area. Impractical to go north all around it because it will expose your flank to counterattacks from the city. The city must be taken. And it’s not that small either, bigger than Kherson.
p.s. on positive side, it certainly is not as fortified as Mariupol. That’s why the attack should not be delayed for too long.

Odessa has miles of tunnels underneath the city. It will take weeks if not months to take it, if that’s even possible. The Ukrainians have been mapping them for years now which means the Russians will be going down there blind into a virtual death trap. Not surprisingly, the Soviets used the same tunnel system to fight the Germans in WW 2 and we know who won that fight.
The Ukrainians are toast. The Russians will bring a flamethrower and flush them out.

I don’t think the Russians actually need to take Odessa by force at the moment, but they need to control the area north of the city to stop the ukrops from getting there unhindered and start turning it into a fortress, which will be extremely difficult to break down. The last thing Putin wants is to start shelling that magnificent city and destroying large parts of it. The people there are, from what I can gather, to a large extent still friendly towards Russia. As things stand right now, I feel it is hard to determine exactly how to handle this major dilemma.of taking that great city and returning it back to its homeland where it belongs.
You have to have a lot of troops to hold the land bridge to Moldova, at least 500,000.
If Russia and its allies almost encircled half of Ukraine, from Kiev down to where they are now in the south, with less than 200.000 soldiers, why would they need half a million to block the northern stretch of land above Odessa? It was decided to reassign: Dmitry Marchenko, presumably, went to the Donbass, and the chief of staff of the operational command “South” Brigadier General Vladislav Leshchinsky is in command of the defense of the Nikolaev-Kherson direction.
