Warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) are conducting patrols on the Syrian-Turkish border on a daily basis, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on July 11.
According to the UK-based monitoring group, VKS warplanes are flying along the border line between the northwestern region of Greater Idlib and Turkish-occupied areas in the northenr Aleppo countryside.
“So far, there is no information on the reasons behind this [the Russian aerial patrols],” the SOHR’s report reads.
The opposition’s aviation observers in northwest and north Syria confirmed the information revealed by the SOHR. Last week, activists even reported that Russian warplanes fired air-to-air missiles over northern Aleppo.
The unusual Russian aerial patrols appear to be coordinated with Turkey. So far, Ankara has not complained about VKS operations near its border line.
These patrols are likely meant to monitor the border with Turkey. Terrorist groups position their military training camps, main headquarters and weapons depots in the region.
