For the tenth day in a row, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) carried out a series of airstrikes on the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib.
The airstrikes, which took place in the morning of August 29, targeted the outskirts of the towns of al-Bara and Kansafra in the al-Zawiya Mount in the southern countryside of Idlib. Al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and Turkish-backed forces maintain a large presence in the mountainous region.

According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Russian warplanes have carried out more than 80 airstrikes on Greater Idlib since the start of August.
Most of the airstrikes hit positions in the southern Idlib countryside, while the rest targeted the northern Lattakia countryside and the northwestern Hama countryside. There were no reports of any airstrikes on the militant-held part of the western Aleppo countryside.
The recent Russian airstrikes were likely a response to the repeated violations of the ceasefire in Greater Idlib, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey on 5 March 2020. HTS and its allies were behind all the violations.
The VKS will not likely cease its combat operations in Greater Idlib any time soon. Yet, a ground operation by the Syrian Arab Army doesn’t seem to be possible as for now.
