On August 24, a series of Russian airstrikes targeted the hideout of ISIS cells in Syria’s central region, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The London-based monitoring group said that three fighter bombers and a drone from the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out the airstrikes, which hit several hideouts near the T2 Pumping Station in Deir Ezzor desert and on al-Bishri Mount along the administrative border between Raqqa and Deir Ezzor.
The airstrikes came following the end of a large-scale combing operation that was carried out by the 17th and 18th divisions of the Syrian Arab Army with support from the artillery units of the 11th Division and fighters from the Palestinian al-Quds Brigade.
The operation covered a large swath of the central region’s desert, known as al-Badiya, from the T2 Pumping Station in Deir Ezzor to the T3 Pumping Station in Homs.
ISIS cells in central Syria stepped up their attacks in recent weeks. On July 31, the terrorists ambushed an oil shipment of the government that was heading from Raqqa to Homs. Six oil tankers were destroyed during the attack, which also claimed the lives of five soldiers of the SAA and two civilian drivers.
Later on August 10, the terrorists attacked a Syrian military bus near the T2 Pumping Station. At least 33 soldiers were reportedly killed in the attack.
The terrorists are likely receiving support from their comrades in the northeastern region and the southeastern area of al-Tanf, which are controlled by the United States-led coalition and its proxies. It’s worth noting that Damascus held Washington responsible for the group’s most recent attacks in the central region.
