On September 11, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) carried out another series of airstrikes on the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib.

Greater Idlib is controlled by several terrorist groups and opposition factions led by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham. The Turkish military maintains a fairly large presence in the region.

According to the London-Based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the new Russian airstrikes targeted the vicinity of the town of Sheikh Yusuf, to the west of Idlib’s city center. No losses have been reported, thus far.

Two days ago, the VKS carried out similar airstrikes on the town of Kabani in northern Lattakia as well on the western outskirts of Idlib city.

The recent Russian airstrikes appear to be a response to the militants’ repeated violations of the ceasefire agreement in Greater Idlib. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed the agreement on March 5.

Turkey committed to neutralize the remaining radicals in Greater Idlib under the agreement. However, Ankara’s forces have not taken any action, so far. This may soon force Syrian government forces and their allies to resume operations in the region.
