On September 1, seven warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) carried out more than 25 airstrikes on ISIS cells in Syria’s vast central region.
According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the airstrikes hit fortified hideouts of the terrorist group in the Hama-Aleppo-Raqqa triangle. In the last few months, the group’s cells carried out several attacks in the area.
The VKS have been supporting Syrian government operations against ISIS cells in the central region for around two years now.
More than 550 Russian airstrikes hit ISIS cells in central Syria last August, according to a recent report by the SOHR. The airstrikes killed nine terrorists and wounded 20 others.
Hundreds of ISIS terrorists are still hiding in central Syria, mainly in the Homs desert. The rough desert lays between eastern Homs and western Deir Ezzor. The terrorists reportedly receive supplies from US-backed fighters based in the southeastern Syrian area of al-Tanf, where the US-led coalition maintains a garrison.
Thanks to the VKS’ combat operations as well as to the repeated combing operations by Syrian government forces, the situation in the central region improved recently. Nevertheless, ISIS insurgency will not likely end soon.
