On July 1, a warplane of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) conducted a reconnaissance mission over the southeastern Syrian area of al-Tanf where the US-led coalition maintains a large garrison, according to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Al-Tanf garrison is located right on Syria’s border with Iraq and Jordan. Around 200 US troops and some 300 militants of the Revolutionary Commando Army (MaT), a local proxy of the coalition, are usually present at the garrison.
The US-led coalition maintains a 55 kilometers no-fly zone around the garrison. Despite this, VKS warplanes conduct reconnaissance sorties over the area on a regular basis.
The new Russian reconnaissance sortie came just a few days after a visit by Brigadier Karl Harris, Deputy Commanding General of the US-led coalition’s Operation Inherent Resolve, to al-Tanf garrison. Duing the visit, the senior US officer met with Brigadier General Muhannad Al Tala’, the commander of the MaT, supposedly to discuss the war on ISIS.

Russia has been growing frustrated with the actions of the US-led coalition’s proxies in al-Tanf garrison. On June 16, a series of Russian airstrikes hit positions of the MaT near the garrison. The airstrikes were reportedly a response to a recent attack by MaT militants that resulted in Russian military casualties. The US-led coalition was alerted ahead of the airstrikes, which caused material losses only.
Less than ten days after the airstrikes, the Russian Ministry of Defense accused the US-led coalition and its proxies in al-Tanf garrison of training and supporting ISIS cells in Syria’s central region.
The US claims that its troops are present in al-Tanf to combat ISIS. However, the garrison was in fact established to block a strategic highway that links the Syrian capital, Damascus, with the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
The recent movements of the US-led coalition and its proxies in al-Tanf could soon lead to a military escalation in southeastern Syria.

There´s another American proxy garrison at al-Zuqf, about 60kms ENE of al-Tanf. The Americans said they withdrew from al-Zuqf in 2017. What´s the situation in al-Zuqf now?
