Russian Warplanes Deliver First Airstrikes On Greater Idlib In 2021 (Video, Photos)

Support SouthFront

On January 9, positions of militants in northern Lattakia, a part of the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib, were targeted by a series of Russian airstrikes.

The Russian airstrikes, which became first in 2021, hit several hills in outskirts of the town of Kabani. The town is an infamous stronghold of many al-Qaeda factions, including Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the Islamic Turkistan Party and Ajnad al-Kavkaz.

The airstrikes on Kabani were conducted by Su-24M attack aircraft, which took off from Russia’s Hmeimim Air Base in the southern countryside of Lattakia.

A day earlier, the HTS-led al-Fateh al-Mubeen Operations Room targeted Syrian military positions in northern Lattakia. Opposition sources claimed that a number of Syrian soldiers and a Russian officer were injured. Today’s airstrikes were likely a response to that attack.

Greater Idlib militants have been becoming more and more aggressive. The ceasefire in the region, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey on March 5 of 2020, is being violated on a daily basis.

The March 5 agreement has so far failed to stabilize Greater Idlib. The region’s militants are still unwilling to accept peaceful efforts. A large-scale operation seems to be needed to open the Lattakia-Aleppo highway, M4, as well as to restore the stability there.

I have said it before, these air strikes are not much good without a large ground offensive to follow up,the rats will be in underground bunkers.

Jens Holm

They dont listen or dont have the capability.

Lone Ranger

It worked in the past. Only depends on the number of sorties you fly. Its not NAM its open range, pretty easy to designate targets.

Cromwell

Well that open range doesn’t seem to have stopped the rats having hiding places in the desert according to the news everytime they have attacked, the Syrians and russians have drones that can fly over the area to locate where those rats are

Lone Ranger

I’m pretty sure they aren’t hiding in the desert. Or at least not longterm. They are crossing the border at desolate places. Justy two cents.

FlorianGeyer

Yes, after a hit there is the run back to Al Tanf for a Big Mac and Fries followed by the rape of a few children for R and R.

Icarus Tanović

Oh my God.

Icarus Tanović

That’s differnet, they’re crossing from Al Tanf.

Icarus Tanović

Why SA force doesn’t flying their sorties? At least against those treacherous kurds oil smuglers from ypg.

Fog of War

Air power alone never wins wars.

Brother Ma

Proven also in Ethiopia with the Tigrean insurrectionists ,which went on for decades and the latter kept hiding in tunnels underneath the ground . Admittedly ,it was before mass use of surveillance and targetting drones …but anyway.

Icarus Tanović

It used to works, as Lone ranger said it just depends on the number of sorties.

cechas vodobenikov

over statement–otherwise experience shows you are mainly correct. guerrilla tactics will prolong this until turkey USA can no longer pay HTS/ ISIS proxies

Lone Ranger

Condolences to the fallen wahabimossad and CIAisis operators. May they rest in pieces…
