On March 20, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) carried out several airstrikes on militants’ positions in the southern and western countryside of Idlib in northwestern Syria.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the airstrikes targeted the following areas:
- Farmlands surrounding the town of Beinin in the al-Zawiya Mount in southern Idlib.
- The town of Bkafla north of the city of Jisr al-Shughur in western Idlib.
No casualties were ported as a result of the airstrikes. The targets were most likely positions of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of the Greater Idlib region. The group is active in the al-Zawiya Mount and Jisr al-Shughur.

The airstrikes coincided with intense shelling by the Syrian Arab Army on militants’ positions in al-Zawiya Mount. Heavy rockets were reportedly used.

The strikes were likely meant as a response to the recent violations of the ceasefire in Greater Idlib. HTS and its allies violated the ceasefire at least 36 times this week, according to the Russian Reconciliation Center in Syria.
In a new report, the Reconciliation Center also warned that the militants are preparing to stage a new provocation with chemical weapons in Greater Idlib. This plot is meant to provoke an attack by the US and its allies on government forces in Syria.

You do realize, that anti-French sentiment, and national political agitation, meant that in 1936, the Franco-Syrian treaty led to French recognition of independence, and the full unification of the country, as per the modern state of Syria. Maps from first decade of twentieth century, predating first world war, and illustrating last remnant moment of Ottoman-Turko rule, are not particularly relevant to the field situation reports from Syrian conflict zone in 2021.
