Late on May 12, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out a number of airstrikes on different parts of the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib.
According to several sources, the Russian airstrikes targeted militants’ positions near the town of Tardin the northern Lattakia countryside as well as in the vicinity of the town of Knaddah in the western countryside of Idlib.
A few hours prior to the airstrikes, the Syrian Arab Army hit a military vehicle near the town of Bidama in the western Idlib countryside with an anti-tank guided missile. Two militants were killed and another was injured as a result of the strike.

Last month, al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), Horas al-Din and Ansar al-Tawhid amassed a large strike force in southern and western Idlib in order to launch a large-scale offensive. More than 300 militants were deployed near Knaddah.
HTS and its allies continue to defy the ceasefire in Greater Idlib, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey on March 5 of last year.
More than a year into the ceasefire agreement, the situation in Greater Idlib is still far from being stable. However, the chances of a major military confrontation remain slim.
