Russian Warplanes Hit Militant Positions In Syria’s Lattakia

Late on November 26, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out a number of airstrikes on militants’ positions in the northern Lattakia countryside.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the airstrikes had hit the outskirts of the town of Kabani. The town is a stronghold of al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, Ajnad al-Kavkaz, the Turkistan Islamic Party and other smaller terrorist groups. The Turkish-backed National Front for Liberation also maintains a presence near the town.

From Kabani, the terrorist groups launch rocket and artillery strikes on Syrian military positions and Russia’s Hmeimim Air Base on a regular basis.

“Opposition factions operating in Lattakia countryside shelled, with heavy artillery, regime positions in Tallat Al-Burkan near Kabani area in Jabal al-Akrad in the north-eastern countryside of Lattakia,” the SOHR reported a few hours prior to the Russian airstrikes, which were likely a response to the shelling.

Militants in northern Lattakia and in other parts of Greater Idlib are violating the ceasefire, that was brokered by Russia and Turkey earlier this year, at an increasing rate.

The situation in Greater Idlib is still far from stable. The militants are stepping up their attacks under the watchful eyes of Turkey. Nevertheless, there are indications of any near operation by Syrian government forces and their allies.
