Warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out a series of airstrikes on positions of radical militants in northern Syria for the second time in the last 24 hours.
Syrian oppositions sources said that the airstrikes targeted Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) forces in the towns of Darat Izza, Kafrnaha, Jamiat al-Rahal, Urum al-Kubra and the 111th Regiment base in the western Aleppo countryside. The radical group captured most of these areas from the Turkish-backed Nour al-Din al-Zenki Movement in the last few days.
HTS’ news network, Iba’a, said that the radical group responded to the Russian airstrikes by shelling positions of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the district of al-Rashidin in the outskirt of the city of Aleppo. The news network claimed that seven Syrian service member were killed in the shelling. However, pro-government source doubted these claims.
Earlier on January 4, Russia warplanes conducted several airstrikes on positions of radical militants in the southern Idlib countryside. Local observers said that the aerial attack was a response to new violations of the Russian-Turkish demilitarized zone agreement.
These airstrikes may represent a new strict policy against the radical militants in northern Syria. This new policy will likely deter the militants and encourage Turkey to implement its commitments within the demilitarized zone agreement.

Any areas that have HTS in control are fair game for the SAA, it’s good news if they take territory from the FSA/NFL, that just means the SAA can freely attack them there whenever they want to, but the areas the FSA/NFL control can’t be attacked by the SAA at all. So the more territory HTS controls when the SAA finally makes a move the better, that means the SAA will be able to take back even more territory than they could have without breaking their part of the Asatana agreement. So come on HTS, take back even more territory from the FSA/NFL, spread yourselves even thinner on the ground than you are already, that’s exactly what the SAA want you to do, good lads.

Yes I also think that’s exactly what’s been happening over the last 2 or 3 months, it’s actually become blatantly obvious to anyone who pays attention. The fact that Erdogan became confident enough to threaten an invasion into Kurdish held Manbij should have also been a hint, but no one seems to put the two things together. I suspected an agreement was made between Putin and Erdogan sometime before the November Astana talks, that gave Erdogan certain assurances of security, and also emboldened him to make the threat to invade Manbij with confidence. Idlib is a sinkhole for Erdogan’s cash, he makes no money there at all, just spends tons of it keeping the show going, and Turkey’s literally nearly broke as it is, so Turkey can’t afford to pay the bills there for much longer, when the cash runs out, Erdogan will have no choice but to leave, that’s INEVITABLE. But if he gets out of southern Idlib voluntarily, his bills not only halve, he also only needs a quarter of the forces he has there now to secure what’s left of his territory, which frees up even more men for his invasion force, why would he want to stay in southern Idlib, that’s a more relevant question that no one seems to ask. If Putin and Erdogan did do a deal that allows Erdogan to pull his forces out of southern Idlib, and I think they did, HTS will be eliminated by all 3 parties, SAA/Russians/Turks+proxies. Assad will move into the vacated HTS areas, and Erdogan will consolidate his forces in the north. Erdogan with Putin’s assurances, will only need to leave a skeleton force to police what’s left of his territory in northern Idlib, and the rest he can do with as he pleases. The cash he saves from abandoning southern Idlib, he can now spend on more important things, like paying for an invasion, or better still his own economy. SF posted a story concerning a high level rebel commander who made accusations of collusion between Erdogan, Putin and others, concerning the demise of HTS, that was the final nail in the coffin for me, I had already suspected the collusion months before, [and made many posts on SF concerning my suspicions], but after that one little story I was left with no doubt at all. All eyes are looking towards Manbij because that’s where all the rebel proxies and the bulk of the Turks vehicles are, but the Turks have been very clever, they’ve also set up another second invasion force on the Al Hasakah/Turkish border, but that force only consists of regular Turkish soldiers, I also find this highly suspicious. The Russians are already imbedded with the US in Manbij, but until they move into all the areas adjacent to the Turkish/Syrian border, I don’t think a Turkish invasion is off the cards just yet. All Erdogan needs is one genuine Kurdish attack [Turkish PKK, or Syrian YPG attack on Turkish soil], or if that doesn’t happen, a well devised false flag attack, to open hostilities against the Kurds, and once it starts, it will only end when either Erdogan wants it to end, or someone ends it for him. With Russian troops imbedded with the US at Manbij, the invasion of Manbij is impossible now, Erdogan needs another way in, so keep an eye open to the north, if an invasion begins, it will only be from the north now, and since he’s been building up his forces near the Al Hasakah/Turkish border, I suspect this will be the location it starts if it does.

Everything they have done so far shows they plan to help restore Syria to its original condition. And this is not speculation, Russian leadership has repeatedly called for everyone to respect Syria’s territorial integrity in every meeting they have had with foreign leaders. I’m not saying your theory is 100% wrong but it would definitely represent a major change in Russia’s Syria policy. And of course it would affect Russia’s image.
