The Russian Aerospace Forces have resumed its combat operations against ISIS cells in the central region of Syria after a short halt.

On April 1 and 2, Russian warplanes carried out more than 30 airstrikes on the terrorist group’s areas of influence in the eastern countryside of Homs, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The London-based monitoring group said that the airstrikes targeted hideouts of ISIS cells in the outskirts of the ancient city of Palmyra as well as near the town of al-Sukhnah. The monitoring group didn’t provide any details on the results of the airstrikes.

The situation in central Syria has been calm for the last few days. The recent Russian airstrikes have apparently forced ISIS cells in the region to tune down their activities.

During March, Russian warplanes carried out more than 270 airstrikes on ISIS cells in central Syria. The airstrikes, which were focused on the eastern Homs countryside and the Hama-Aleppo-Raqqa triangle, claimed the lives of nine terrorists and wounded at least 17 others.

ISIS insurgency in the central region will likely go on. Syrian authorities believe that the terrorist group’s cells continue to receive support from US-backed fighters based in the southeastern area of al-Tanf.

Very recently, Syrian troops clashed with an unidentified force that approached their positions in the al-Hamad desert in central Syria coming from al-Tanf. Four soldiers and one of the infiltrators were killed in the clashes.
