The deliberate offensive of Russian troops continues on the main battlefields on the Donbass fronts. The most hot spots remain Bakhmut to the north of Donetsk and Ugledar to the south.
On January 29, the President of Ukraine acknowledged that the situation in the Bakhmut, Ugledar and other regions in the Donbass remains difficult for the Ukrainian army. Zelensky complained about the continued assaults by Russian forces, drawing attention to the high intensity of their attacks.
In the area of Bakhmut, Wagner fighters continue to assault villages on the outskirts in order to take the Ukrainian garrison in the city into an operational encirclement. Fighting continues in the southern, eastern and northern districts of the city itself.
To the southwest of the city, the Wagner units are trying to cut the Konstantinovka-Bakhmut highway in Ivanovskoye. According to the most recent data, they have already taken control of positions a couple of kilometers away from the village. The Ukrainian military is trying to slow down their advance by heavy shelling at Russian strongholds in Kleshchevka and Kurdyumovka.
To the northwest of the city, Wagner fighters are encircling the Ukrainian garrison in Krasnaya Gora. They continue their attacks from the south from the side of Podhorodnoye and from the north from Blagodatnoye, which came under Russian control on January 29.
The Russian offensive continues to the north of Soledar. Wagner’s units continue the assault operations near Rozdolovka in an attempt to secure control of the Bakhmut-Seversk highway.
The Russian advance poses threat for the Ukrainian garrison in Seversk, to which fighting is approaching both from the southern, east ern and north-eastern directions. Russian troops continue attempts to break through the Ukrainian defense in Verkhnekamenskoye.

To date, fighting continues in the city and on its outskirts.

They have transferred several thousands to the city in the last few weeks alone on top of the 15~20 thousands in the city and nearby area already there for the last few months. The losses must be unbelievable if the city requires thay many soldiers to maintain the defense. If encircled that would be the a major loss and massive defeat of Ukraine I do not see them returning from. As was said, this is the big push. If Ukraine holds that’s it. They hold. They won’t push back. If the Russians push, they threaten to destroy the bulk of the Ukrainian Army. From there they have the means to dictate how this war ends. Do they take the south and everything easy of the Dnieper? Or do they continue and bring the Nazi government in Kiev down once and for all? With no army, it will be just militias and various extremist groups holding the lines. Very reminiscent of Berlin and Nazi Germany in the final days of the war.
If they can close the circle around bakmut then its all over but the body bags and time for leaflets and stay-awake barrages, no sleep ’til you lay down the rifle and come out with your hands up etc. Zelensky needs to do whats right and surrender himself to russian authorities and declare surrender on behalf of the military
There’s no reason to believe that the entire garrison will just accidentally end up being completely encircled and allow themselves to be slaughtered there. There’s rumours going around that Ukraine is on the cusp of organizing a retreat. Maybe in a couple of days we’ll see the results. Ultimately Artemovsk isn’t all that important. Like Strelkov says, the main defensive line is the Slavyansk-Krematorsk line.
A retreat would be too difficult at this point. The Russians almost have the city encircled. At this point, a retreat would be too costly and result in a rout of the AFU. Russia has the advantage and fire control over the roads now. Any major retreat will be difficult at the very least. The Ukrainians are suffering moderate to heavy losses just to deploy fresh soldiers to the city. Leaving will be similar. The utter chaos will be difficult to manage. 1 way in 1 way out. Guns all around firing upon that 1 path. The UAF will not retreat. They will use those in the city to buy more time to prepare another defense. And so forth to the last able Ukrainian.
Bakhmut is important in this though. Anyone who says so clearly cannot read a map. The terrain the roads and the hubs for logistics all are key. The city is in a relatively vital location for either attacker or defender. The fall will also break up the lines of the AFU

Russia is calm and methodical in using war to replace fruitless negotiations. The reluctance to target decisionmaking centers, despite provocations, is because the Russians know the future of Europe depends on a legally valid Ukrainian surrender. Zelensky or his legal successor needs to be alive to sign it. Such documents will permanently establish that NATO is defeated and that it has no say in the future security arrangements in Europe, because it sided with a vanquished fascist state.
