Russia’s Army-2020 International Event Begins, Showcasing Thousands Of Weapons And Hardware

Support SouthFront

The International Military-Technical Forum “Army-2020” began on August 23rd, with an opening address by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The event features 28,000 exhibits, dozens of delegations from 92 countries, hundreds of units of military equipment.

Representatives from Russia’s Rostec said that more than 70 new products would be presented at the event.

“For several years, the International Army Games have been contributing to strengthening friendly links, to open and well-wishing exchange of expertise. Military personnel from different countries compete in their skills and equipment operation, in combat prowess and military discipline; they test themselves for readiness to overcome serious ordeals and perform tasks in extreme conditions,” Putin said.

In addition to the exhibition part, there will also be competitions and war games which involved tens of thousands of troops from various countries.

The Berkuts aerobatics team were part of the opening ceremony.

Some of the featured pieces of hardware and weaponry include some “old” products that are still in development and have generally undergone little change, but also some heavily improved ones.

For instance, featured were:

  • T-14 Armata battle tank;
  • The tank support combat vehicle (BMPT);
  • The Kurganets-25 BMP;

And more had no visible changes from 2019.

However, the T-15 Heavy Infantry Fighting vehicle was improved with a “Kinzhal” [not the hypersonic missile] defense system with a powerful 57 mm gun

The cannon fires 80 rounds per minute at the target and is capable of hitting most armored targets on the battlefield, as well as enemy helicopters and attack aircraft at altitudes up to eight kilometers.

Previously, the T-15 was demonstrated with the previous generation Baikal combat module.

The latest modifications of the T-90M and T-80BVM battle tanks were also shown to the public for the first time ever.

The T-90M one received a new turret with multilayer armor and ammunition storage outside the fighting compartment, a 125-mm 2A82-1M cannon, like the Armata, a highly automated Kalina fire control system, anti-cumulative lattice screens and a Relikt reactive armor system.

The T-80BVM is now equipped with a Sosna-U multichannel gunner’s sight, a 2A46M-4 gun, a modified gas turbine engine and a modern ultra-shortwave radio station “Aqueduct”.

According to the designers, the modernization has significantly increased the combat characteristics of Russian vehicles.

This year there are several interesting debuts at Army. For example, a new version of the Tiger off-road vehicle is a machine-gun pickup, or, as it is fashionable to say now, a “gantruck”.

This is an open version of an armored vehicle with brackets for small arms. Depending on the customer’s wishes, the machine-gun “Tiger” can be equipped with diesel engines with a capacity of 215 to 300 horsepower, mechanical or automatic transmission.

“The vehicle was created taking into account the Syrian experience,” Sergei Suvorov, a specialist at the Military-Industrial Company, told RIA Novosti. “It is ideal for the Special Operations Forces. This buggy is designed for raids on enemy rear lines and for reconnaissance. Five machine guns, one of which is a large-caliber one. Transportable ammunition – four and a half thousand rounds. In addition, there are two Igla MANPADS and three RPG-26 grenade launchers.”

One of the most important novelties of Army-2020 is the Hermes long-range guided missile system from the Instrument Design Bureau. Designed to destroy modern and advanced tanks, lightly armored targets, engineering and fortifications at a distance of up to one hundred kilometers – both with a salvo and with single fire. The complex is currently being tested.

This year the Army has a lot of modern and promising unmanned aerial vehicles. The two that stand out were both produced by the Kronstadt company – Orion and Helios with a wingspan of 16 and 20 meters, respectively.

“Orion” has completed all the tests and is ready to be put into service, “said Maxim Gordashevsky, lead engineer at Kronstadt.

“This is a reconnaissance and strike drone with a combat radius of 300 kilometers. He is able to stay in the air for about a day and reach speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour. The maximum combat load is 250 kilograms of guided bombs and guided missiles.

As for “Helios”, it is presented so far in the form of a model. This is a highly specialized drone for early warning radar. It will be able to stay in the air for up to 30 hours and transmit data on the air situation to other aircraft, as well as to ground headquarters.”

As for small arms, this year two high-profile premieres were made by the Kalashnikov concern.

The AK-19 assault rifle is a modification of the AK-12 adopted for service under the NATO cartridge of 5.56×45 mm caliber, which is of great interest among foreign customers.

Considering the high number of foreign delegations in the Kalashnikov pavilion, the export prospects for the AK-19 are very promising.

“The second novelty is the RPL-20 light machine gun,” explains Vladimir Onokoi, a specialist from the concern. This is the first domestic 5.45 mm belt-fed machine gun. Attempts to create something like this were made back in the USSR, but they were unsuccessful. The machine gun is still in a single copy. In the future, it will be able to occupy the niche of the RPK-74 light machine gun in the army. “

The event is just beginning, as such there will be more videos and photographs in the upcoming days.

“T-15 was demonstrated with the previous generation Baikal combat module” Maybe the module is “previous generation” but fuck the “module” because what it counts is absolutely brand new 57mm automatic canon Turret that hosts a 57mm autocannon capable of engaging targets located at up to 14.5 kilometer distance. Rate of fire – 120 rounds per minute. It is literally double fire power in every sense of the word comparing to previous 30mm automatic canon All that on the remote-controlled turret

Антон С

14,5 km is maximum. Distance of effective fire at armored targets (IFV) is 4-6 km due different sources. It can hit aerial targets more effectively than 30-mm frag shell.

HiaNd

yes I know that ….57mm is the best anti aircraft caliber because of bigger range comparing to 30 mm 4-6 km with that caliber is plenty to chase away any TOW 2 missiles and other clowns pretending curageous

Lone Ranger

Most excellent. CIA trolls and hasbarats will cry and rage :)

This drone looks like a hybrid of Turkish TB2 and Israeli Hermes 450.

Servet Köseoğlu

israel blueprint can do miracles…

rightiswrong rightiswrong

Anything with wings and an engine looks like that, or any other flying craft.

They all follow the same laws of aerodynamics you know.

Sauron

This Armata platform is way too early for its time, and way too expensive to mass produce, based on Russian purchasing power at least. Good concept though.

Lone Ranger

Russia has more cash than the U.S.

Sauron

having cash doesn’t mean u gotta go on spending spree

Lone Ranger

Thats true. But I think they are doing it smart. Russian military isnt overbloated nowdays like the Soviet was, or the U.S. is today.

Sauron

I would rather have the t90s constantly modernized. will serve 30-40 more years that way. its a very good machine

rightiswrong rightiswrong

The T90M has the same gun and FCS as the T14, the T14 is being used to test new tech which is then applied to older Russian tanks. This then makes the cost of producing these advanced technologies cheaper for the T14s of the future, while upgrading older generation equipment well beyond current Western capability.

The Russians have this well sussed out.

rightiswrong rightiswrong

I trillion bucks for a single engine, barely sonic, flying radiator?

You gotta laugh at your idea of a spending spree, lol.

Антон С

FRS and ECB makes money from air, so it’s impossible to compete them. Though the end of this “magic” is near, if to look at the debt. Their debts is the mirror of created money.

HiaNd

They are “printing” so fast digitally that it is impossible for printing FED to compete with digital FED

Lone Ranger

Yeah, thats why I said what I said. Russia has real money backed by gold and production and a trade surplus.

Lone Ranger

Better have it and not need it than not having it when needed

Sauron

as the platform, yeah for sure. but mass producing it will hot hard on the economy. better spend money on the diversification.

Lone Ranger

When you have 30,000 tanks and 40,000 APCs you dont really need it. Its slow shift, like it was the case with the T-90. We will see more T-14 when the older T-72s will be sold abroad or phased out. This year they should have a 100+ T-14s till years. end

Sauron

132 of mix t14 and t15 is for testing. not a given fact that will be mass produced.

Lone Ranger

I doubt they would invest that much in it if they wont mass produce it.

Sauron

Production is not very expensive in comparison with maintenance, if to calculate throughout the lifeline. And this is not a simple machine like T55, it will literally drain money on maintenance if used in large numbers.

Lone Ranger

But how many do they need…? A few hundred or a thousend should be more than enough for the next 10 years. They already have more T-72B3s and T-90s than what they need.

Sauron

Right now, need? 0. That is my point. Since it is expensive and there is no need, there is no point of mass producing them.

Lone Ranger

Is 100 a year considered massproducing?

Sauron

In this case I would say 100 is not a mass production. But technically mass production is more about setup of assembly lines allocation of resources and funds and etc, than exact number of product.

rightiswrong rightiswrong

Then why mass produce Abrams then? Why mass produce F35?

When you have an irrational rogue state like the USA, then it’s wise to prepare the already well armed forces, with cutting edge solutions to aid them against larger forces. Russia has 145 million people to NATOs 1 billion. NATO spends twenty times as much as Russia does on defence products, and NATO troops are deployed worldwide as an active force of oppression.

HiaNd

How is need “0” with all that NATO sitting on Russian border and any incident can radically change situation over the night?!? You talk nothing but the nonsense in this comment.

How on earth 5th generation tank with completely new more advance design crew-less turret can not be needed in the future?!!? Nobody designs new generation tank and than doesn’t produce it. There was already 2 tech demonstrators before Armata “Black Eagle” and T-99 (which was just more expensive version of Armata). They are not printing $$$ out of blue, they must put finally this new design in production and stop “tech demonstrator” bollocks that is waste of money.

Do you think that T72B4 even if it is upgraded to T-72B40000 can be competitive in next 20 years?! They MUST replace those tanks with upgraded T-90 as cheap option fills the numbers instead of T-72 and introduce T-14 as the expensive top notch tank that carries most difficult tasks! T-72B4 is just cheapest of all solutions a stop gap in transition period to the new generations of tanks(T-14) that are at the moment VERY expensive but whose price will logically go down when other countries start to buy those tanks as well !

And that is exactly what Russian army is waiting that PRICE goes down! Nothing else! They know that T-14 is clearly better than T-90MA (MS if you prefer) and worth money but their budget is prohibitively limited.

Sauron

If the decision makers are old geezers with nostalgic days on T55 then yeah, why not. I tell them knock yourleves out, produce 5000 tanks and spend 200billion usd over 30-40years. On the same way breed 200000 horses, perfect for post EMP attack.

HiaNd

You are one of those “tanks are obsolete” guys. Challenger 2 (1998 design) is maybe getting obsolete but not T-14.

Armata T-14 is 21 century tank that is having its own drone that accompanies the tank in all the situations to make awareness of the battle field at all times. T-14 is built with objective that one day is completely automatic with AI and remote control without crew.

Anyways it is not about ‘tanks” but about MOBILITY (Russia is huge country) ! Modern wars will be extremely fast thus very mobile.

In the modern warfare tactical nukes could become banality. I would most definitely prefer to be in 80km speeding tank than soldier on foot if tactical nukes start to fly!

There is no such thing as selective EMP and Wastern forces would be immediately defeated without their high tech gadgets (hit by EMP)

Russians were and still are much less (by tradition) dependent on high tech and on top Russia is more advanced on EMP weapons . Just recently I have seen article saying that Russia is working on new generation of EMP weapons

Антон С

First plan was to build 2300 units. But I don’t know clearly: 2300 tanks or tanks + IFVs. I guess T-14 could be a command tank as Ka-52 for a group of helicopters, because T-14 and K-52 has long range radar (for their class of machines).

Антон С

It’s the serial batch.

HiaNd

Not true T-14 will be most definitely mass produced (after this 1st batch) the only question not officially answered are ; how many exactly will be produced and when… Which is absolutly normal thing for Russian army who never brags about the numbers (Soviet tradition) T-15 mass production is under examination though.

Sauron

What is not true in my comment?

HiaNd

You are right

I take it back, for some reason I wasn’t reading attentively My bad

Антон С

Actual numbers 10 times lower. ~2500-3000 tanks and 6-7 thousand APCs and IFVs. Unknown number of armored trucks. It’s actual number of active units. Almost all of them ready for battle instantly. V.Gerasimov announced in 2016 the plan to have in 2018 125 battalion tactical groups of instant readiness (800 people for each), it’s a battalion (400-500 men) with reinforcements (anti-air, artillery, reconnaissance etc). Final number is to have 250 BTG (200 thousand men, it’s more than half of the land forces). For comparison: plan of the Atlantic pact in Europe is to have 30 battalions, 30 squadrons and battle 30 ships after 30 days of mobilization.

Lone Ranger

Active units yes. But the mothballed ones add up. Russia has more tanks than the rest of the World combined.

Антон С

In 1991 it was 40 or even 50 thousand tanks in reserves, including T-34, T-10 (1946 or 47) and T-54/55. Their combat value is close to zero.

Lone Ranger

The T-55 gave jihadis a run for their money in Syria. Most the reserves nowdays are T-64, T-72, T-80.

Антон С

That’s why reserves are lower than 20000. T-64 will be out of reserves, because it’s production of plant in Har’kov. It’s hard to take spare parts from Kiev regime. T-72 is Lower Tagil, T-80 – Omsk.

Lone Ranger

20.000 is still more than three times the U.S. stockpile. Albeit Russia tends to under report numbers. I still remember U.S. thought Russia would have around 65 nuclear subs in total. At the end of the Cold War it turned out Russia operated around 265 nuclear subs vs around 55 of the U.S.

Антон С

265 is real number, if to count all submarines, including obsolete ones (1st and 2nd generation), while active submarine fleet consisted from 3rd generation ships: 671 (modernized versions from 2nd to 3rd generation), 971, 667 (modernized), 941, 949. Plus several subs of 705 project and few other experimental projects. Combat fleet was much lower than 265, near 100 nuclear submarines or less.

Lone Ranger

To my knowledge 265 were all nuclear powered. If you add the conventional ones the number was more close to 400.

HiaNd

And “VD”?

Did Russia arrive on 70 000+ paratroopers….any news on production of transport planes for them?

Антон С

VDV now have no 70, half of this number is correct. In the past (in the Union) it was 80 thousands and 6 divisions, now it’s 4 divisions and 4 brigades. VDV division is less in numbers than linear infantry, 7000 thousand men as I remember.

HiaNd

Yes BMD-4M airborne infantry fighting vehicles and BTR-MDM “Rakushka”. Thanks for the answers Anton!! PS.

I was convinced that they have much bigger number of paratroopers and that objective was to arrive on 70 000. That was at least what I was reading many years ago…

HiaNd

Not according to Sputnik article (again) that claims 13 000 tanks in active use and not 2500-3000 Russia, the US and China are in top three with 12,950, 6,333 and 5,800, respectively.

https://sputniknews.com/uk/202008251080268462-uk-military-chiefs-could-scrap-all-countrys-tanks-to-modernise-armed-forces-report-claims/

rightiswrong rightiswrong

It’s even better in real life, like the Russians already have.

Concepts are what the US have, concepts for space lasers, concepts for hypersonic weapons, concepts for space battle stars etc etc.

The rest of the world calls that bollox, or dreams to the more sensitive.

Антон С

It’s hard to calculate. T-90A cost was about 120 mln rubles in 2011, ~30 rubles for a dollar, so it’s about 4 million per 1 unit for the MoD. Now 1 dollar = 70-75 rubles. Cost in dollars became 2 times less, but cost of tank is the same, even higher, because inflation. Domestic prices 2-3 times lower than export prices. Cost of T-14 is 2 times (not higher) more than T-90A. If we sell T-90A for the same 4-5 million, then T-14 should cost 8-9. T-90M price somewhere in between – 6-7 million it’s much lower than export price of modern “Leopard-2”. T-14 has almost the same or a bit less price, but it’s new generation with active protection in basic version. Active protection kit cost $0,5-1 mln.

Sauron

Don’t calculate the cost in usd (unless you are talking about the export), all assembly process is in Russia so the exchange rate has no direct effect on the cost of production. If you calculate in USD in order to compare german and russian military industry complex then you will need to consider public purchasing power. my suggestion would be to calculate compare with PPP instead of nominal. 1million usd in German budget and Russian budget is not the same value.

Антон С

“then you will need to consider public purchasing power”

As I did.

“1million usd in German budget and Russian budget is not the same value.”

Are you talking this to me? It’s not a secret.

Wizzy

Finally, a Russian combat drone

Антон С

Not the first.

Антон С

Absolutely new prototype of UAV “Thunder”, a smaller helper of manned planes. Mass up to 7 tons, 2 tons of load.

http://bastion-karpenko.ru/VVT1/GROM_BLA_ARMIA-2020_01.jpg http://bastion-karpenko.ru/VVT1/GROM_BLA_PROSPEKT_ARMIA-2020_01.jpg

HiaNd

2 tons of load?!!?

That is LOT for the size of the drone.

Speed? Range?

Антон С

Speed is subsonic, range is unknown. Not less than a range of a leader (fighter plane) I guess, 1000-1500 km. Can be used separately as ordinary UAV.

HiaNd

you got it WRONG about payload….It is 500 kg not 2 tons! 500kg sounds much more realistic considering the size of the drone

—– The UAV weighs about 7 tonnes, and has a 500 kg payload, with its main mission being to help keep pilots and their aircraft safe by providing support in the destruction of enemy air defences, and in carrying out other combat operations.

https://sputniknews.com/military/202008241080266320-army-2020-developers-reveal-mission-capabilities-of-three-brand-new-russian-drones/

Антон С

Found the data sheet. http://bastion-karpenko.ru/VVT1/GROM_BLA_PROSPEKT_ARMIA-2020_02.jpg

Max. mass 7000 kg Max. load 2000 kg Speed max 1000 km/h Speed cruise 800 km/h Combat radius 700 km Max. altitude 12 km

500 kg is the highest caliber of bomb for this UAV.

HiaNd

I would still stick with Sputnik as source and 500kg sounds reasonable rather than 2 tons. Maybe under MAX. LOAD he was talking about fuel + payload in that case 2 tons is OK. Of course 500kg is the “highest” because he can’t carry more than that weight.

@Inc2Get

Exactly, 2 ton seems way to excessive. Probably typo.

Антон С

If a fighter plane’s load is 8-9 tons with full mas ~30 tons, then why 7-ton UAV can’t carry 2 tons? Manufacturer knows more than info agency.

HiaNd

OK you got point there ther is no reason why shouldn’t have similar ratio. I didn’t know it was info from “manufacturer”….. I thought it was some unverified news from defense news blog or similar. So “Sputnik” talks bollocks….

Антон С

Up to 2 tons with shorter range. Ordinary payload is smaller. Look at the scheme of combat load: 6 missiles or 8x100kg bombs or 4x250kg bombs or 2x500kg bombs (free fall or guided) . So normal payload is near 1 ton.

HiaNd

Thanks buddy ! That was full answer. That is very good drone than with lots to offer and with probably very small signature. I’m glad that Russia is making huge strides to catch up on her delay in drones

Servet Köseoğlu

well this is interesting..ı didnt expect that…as a golden rule Ew components secret..
