Russia's Encircling Strategy Now Threatens Fortress Of Krasny Liman

Russian forces have made significant advances in the Liman (Krasny Liman) direction, marking another step toward the upcoming encirclement of this key Donbass stronghold. The latest development came with the start of Russian assault on the village of Shandrigolovo, which provided the image of the general Russian plan to encircle another Ukrainian fortress. The settlement is located just 9 km north of Krasny Liman. This move is part of a broader Russian strategy of flanking and envelopment, which has proven effective in other sectors of the Donbass front.

According to the latest reports from the battlefield, the Russian troops have approached the eastern outskirts of Shandrilovo after fierce fighting in the forests nearby. As a reult of the battles, Russian forces took control of Ukrainian stronghold deployed on the territory of the local farm, paving the way for the further assault in the village.

After securing a dam south of Karpovka, Russian units advanced to the western bank of the Nitrius River and are now also consolidating on the northern outskirts of Sredneye, with fighting ongoing on the outskirts. This is the second direction of Russian assault on the area of Seredneye and Shandrigolovo.

At the same time, the Russian army is pushing toward Stavki, approaching Krasny Liman from the north. In late July, Russian forces launched assault on Kolodezi. Further clashes rage in and near Kolodezi and Mirnoye, where Russian troops are probing Ukrainian defenses. However, Ukrainian forces continue to hold key positions in Mirnoye and the fish farm area between Yampolovka and Torskoye, demonstrating stubborn resistance despite mounting pressure.

Russian forces took control of a stronghold deployed in a camp in the Serebryansky forestry in late July:

But the pressure is not just coming from the north of Krasny Liman. To the east, Russian troops have crossed the Zherebets River and pushed into Zarechnoye, a settlement 8 km from the key town. Russian assault groups are attempting to push into Zarechnoye via a central bridge, but Ukrainian forces are fiercely contesting the crossing. Simultaneously, advances in the Serebryansky forestry area threaten Ukrainian positions from the southeast. If these pushes continue with the same success, Russian forces could soon form a semi-circle around the city, cutting off Ukrainian supply lines and forcing a difficult defensive stand to the enemy.

Russian aviation keeps playing a crucial role, relentlessly striking Ukrainian fortifications with heavy FAB glide bombs, while drone operators provide precision support for advancing assault groups. The combination of aerial bombardment and ground infiltration has left Ukrainian forces struggling to hold their positions.

Another Ukrainian stronghold captured in the Serebryansky forestry:

The situation in the Krasny Liman sector underscores a broader trend. Ukraine’s defensive lines in Donbass are steadily collapsing under relentless Russian pressure. With Russian forces applying the same encirclement tactics that worked in previous battles for Ukrainian fortresses, Ukrainian troops face dwindling options—retreat or risk being cut off.

This offensive comes at a politically sensitive moment, amid anticipated talks between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. Whether these discussions will influence the battlefield remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: Russia is pushing hard for territorial gains before any potential diplomatic shifts.
