On December 24th, a military exhibition of modern and prototype weapons took place, prior to the expanded meeting of the Russian Defense Ministry Board.

Among the exhibition, a model was presented of a fifth-generation nuclear submarine cruiser – the Project 545, with the code “Laika-Navy” (Laika-VMS).

According to the plate that accompanied the model, the Project 545 nuclear submarine cruiser is designed to destroy critical enemy targets, including surface vessels, submarines, as well as various boats, it is also capable of taking down fixed structures.

It is to have a displacement of 11,340 tons, a maximum speed of 35 knots. It is expected to have an endurance of 90 days, and a maximum immersion depth of 600 meters.

Its main armaments:

  • 3M-14 Kalibr cruise missiles;
  • ZM-22 Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles;
  • 3M-55 Onyx supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles;
  • SAM for MANPADS Igla;
  • 81RU Otvet, anti-submarine missiles, currently in development;
  • Hishtnik anti-submarine missiles;
  • Fizik-1 torpedoes;
  • USET-80 torpedoes;
  • Lasta anti-torpedoes;
  • PMR-2 “Golets”, anti-submarine mine-missile;
  • MTPK-1 mine-torpedoes.

The project developer is SPMBM Malakhit JSC. In April 2019 it was reported that SPMBM Malakhit JSC, ”began an experimental design work under the code “Laika” to create a fifth-generation nuclear submarine cruiser for the Russian Navy.”

At the end of 2018, the SPMBM Malakhit JSC completed research work under the Husky code to test out the possibility of a fifth-generation nuclear submarine cruiser, the results of the work were approved by the Russian Ministry of Defense, and the bureau began the next step in creating the new nuclear submarine cruiser under code “Laika”.

It was reported that one of its types of strike weapons would be 3M22 Zircon hypersonic missiles, and it was announced that Laika would have a modular design and a single integrated combat control system with artificial intelligence.

In June 2018, in the annual report of the SPMBM Malakhit JSC, it was reported that the R&D for the creation of a new multi-purpose nuclear submarine cruiser of a new generation should begin in 2019. The document noted that the implementation of work is provided for by the draft State Armament Program for the period 2018-2027, the code of work was not indicated.

According to the data presented, the new submarine will cause even less noise than the fourth-generation nuclear submarines. The developer wishes to use composite materials in the design of the nuclear submarine. Multilayer structures are designed to reduce the reflection of enemy sonar signals, as well as reduce the total mass of the ship.

The first serial submarine of project 08851 Yasen-M was recently launched, which became a further development of the Yasen submarine. Experts attribute it to the fourth generation and consider it potentially one of the most powerful multi-purpose submarines.
