Russia has begun using an upgraded version of its Geran-4 jet-powered one-way attack drone with a new optical navigation system, a domestic engine and a specialized warhead for striking bridges and power infrastructure, Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence said on October 5.
In a report, the intelligence service said that the Geran-4 received a system called Susanin, which uses an optical sensor to compare images captured during flight with reference images stored in the drone’s computer. The system is designed to help the drone correct its route between the launch point and its target in addition to satellite and inertial navigation. A similar system is used on the newer Geran-5, according to the service.
Russia also replaced the Chinese Telefly TF-TJ2000A turbojet engine previously used on the Geran-4 with a Russian-made equivalent produced in Alabuga, according to the Ukrainian agency.
In addition, the upgraded Geran-4 carries a new shaped-charge warhead designed to cut through bridge structures and supports for overhead power lines.
This particular change indicates a more specialized role for the drone against fixed infrastructure rather than reliance solely on the effects of a conventional explosive warhead.
The Geran-4 is a jet-powered, flying-wing drone designed for medium- and long-range attacks. It is about 3 meters long, has a wingspan of more than 2.5 meters and can carry a warhead of up to 50 kilograms, with a reported speed of 350 to 500 kilometers per hour and an effective range of up to 800 kilometers.
The reported changes are part of the continued evolution of Russia’s Geran family, with new propulsion, navigation and payload configurations appearing as the drones are adapted for use against targets in Ukraine. Kyiv’s air defenses have been struggling to keep up with the latest generations of Geran drones.
