The Russian military’s newly-acquired suicide drones are inflicting heavy losses on Ukrainian forces, The Wall Street Journal reported on September 17.
The report claimed that the Russian military is using Iranian-made Shahed-136 suicide drone, repainted in Russian colors and rebranded as Geranium-2, to target Ukrainian armor and artillery positions in the Kharkiv region.
Colonel Rodion Kulagin, commander of artillery of Ukraine’s 92nd Mechanized Brigade, told the New York-based journal that his forces lost two 152 mm self-propelled howitzers, two 122 mm self-propelled howitzers and two BTR armored personnel carriers over the past week as a result of attacks by Russian suicide drones.
The commander went on to reveal that last month the Russian military destroyed a US-supplied M777 155 mm towed howitzer with a suicide drone during an apparent test.
Russian suicide drones fly at a very low altitude which makes extremely hard to detect and shot down, according to Col. Kulagin, who plead for help from the United State.
While The Wall Street Journal said that the suicide drones were Iranian-made Shahed-136, they may be a “Russified” version of the drone. Russia may be manufacturing or assembling Shahed-136 drones locally under some agreement with Iran.

The Shahed-136 has a range of more than 2,500 kilometers and can be armed with a warhead weighting around 50 kilograms. The drone is guided by a satellite-aided inertial navigation system. According to The Wall Street Journal report, the drone has high resistance to jamming.
Last month, US and other Western intelligence officials claimed that Iran had transferred at least 300 UAVs to Russia. However, according to the officials, these were Shahed-129, Shahed-191 and Mohajer-6 combat drones. None of these types have been spotted in service with the Russian military, so far.
The Russian military has been using suicide drones, like the locally-made KUB-BLA and Lancet, to a great effect since the start of the special operation in Ukraine. The introduction of longer-range suicide drones similar to the Shahed-136 will only make the situation worse for Ukrainian forces.

This “third world country” has been top 5 engineering graduates for the longest time, that’s not including Iran being one of few in nano technology etc. USA curriculum is no where near as good as other countries, even Canada is known to have a harsher curriculum. I’ve talked to Canadians who’ve studied in USA and they told me their first year math courses at the university was equivalent to a Canadian 10th grader (second year high schooler) math courses. As far as I know, Geran-2 was in development in Russia since at least 2019. It’s nothing new and smaller than our toy with much, much shorter range. I said before, Iran and Russia are cooperating in various military projects and several of those projects are related to drones (I specifically named Orion). But it’s hard to digest that Russia buys (and we sell) finished, ready to use drones, our newest toys at that.
But this one seems fishy. According to them, Russia used this “Iranian” loitering munition in at least 7 occasions and all the remains they have to picture is this one? What about the engine, the picture they showed about the engine is puzzling. A small, unidentifiable electric engine which can’t propel a drone with 50kg warhead, let alone the systems and batteries needed for it. And the range for such drone, even with %10 of that payload can’t possibly be 1000-2500km which is attributed to Shahed-136. In addition, they say the drone is silent and suddenly appears. Note that in picture of the stabilizer, we don’t have a size reference to say it’s close to the Shahed-136 size.
You make your own conclusion. Mine is this one: From the start of the “counter-offensive” in Kharkov, something was evident. When your own commanders say they couldn’t advance as fast as Russians retreated, you should’ve thought it’s not normal. Russians called back their heavy gear and better soldiers and evacuated much of the civilians way before start of the Ukrainian offensive. What remained was a skeleton crew of “Bear cubs” conscripts and militia and even they didn’t resist against enemy, right until they reached Oskol: Another cauldron in the making, demilitarization continued. But the media presented it as scared orcs running away from the brave pure-blood Aryans, Russians confused and cry to return to Mordor ASAP, etc, etc. Now it seems the tide is turned. Better blame it on bad Iranian drones and ask for more support.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m itching to see our toys’ performance against better western hardware (What Saudis receive is really rubbish, at least Ukrainians receive some things from the NATO countries own stores. Besides, we don’t send any weapons to Yemen!!) and certainly will be happy to know if they act really like a wonder-weapon. But I don’t believe in dreams and wishful thinking. At least show us a picture of what remains of the engine (a 50hp, 4 cylinder engine), with size reference like a person, a handgun, something concrete and I’ll join the celebration/crying with you!
