Russia has upgraded its Kalibr cruise missile thanks to experience gained during the campaign in Syria, defense minister Sergei Shoigu said in an interview with Moskovsky Komsomolets that was published on September 22.
TASS quoted the minister as saying that it “took so long to upload a flight mission for the Kalibr missile that a target could be missed,” adding “Today it takes much less to upload a flight mission for Kalibr.”
According to Shoigu, the instruction to fine-tune the Kalibr missile had been given by Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.
The Kalibr cruise missile has a range of 1,500-2,500 km and warhead weighting more than 400 kg. The missile is launched from surface vessels and submarines.
The Russian Navy has launched dozens of Kalibr missiles on terror targets in Syria since 2015. The missile was used extensively to strike key ISIS positions during the 2017 central Syrian campaign.
Shoigu noted that about 300 types of weapons have been fine-tuned thanks to the experience gained in Syria. Another 12 pieces, which had been considered as promising before, were taken out of production and service.
