Russia’s newest 2S38 Derivatsiya-PVO anti-aircraft artillery system could be turned into a combat robot, the Defense Ministry’s Zvezda TV reported on December 30 citing the developer of the system.
The 2S38 Derivatsiya-PVO is made on the basis of the BMP-3 chassis and armed with a 57-mm automatic anti-aircraft gun. The system is designed to defeat unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles, air-to-ground missiles, tactical aviation jets and military helicopters. It’s also capable of intercepting rockets launched by rocket and misisle artillery systems.
According to reprots, the Derivatsiya-PVO will be especially effective to protect large isntallations against swarms of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) The 2S38 Derivatsiya-PVO is capable of effectively targeting UAVs at the distance of over 3,000km. At the same time, the employment of the automatic anti-aircraft gun rather than missiles against such targets increases the cost-effectiveness of the system.
The 2S38 Derivatsiya-PVO’s crew are 3 persons. However, works are already ongoing to automatize the system and turn it into a combat robot.
