Russia’s new TOS-2 Tosochka thermobaric rocket system has seen its first combat use during the ongoing Russian special military operation in Ukraine, TASS reported on May 28 citing sources in the Russian Ministry of Defense.
According to the Russian news agency, TOS-2 systems were used against positions of Kiev forces near the city of Kharkiv.
“TOS-2 systems were used in the Kharkiv direction,” the agency’s source said, adding that many other new systems are currently being tested in the battlefield in Ukraine.
The TOS-2 is the new generation of the Soviet TOS-1 thermobaric rocket system. While the TOS-1 and TOS-1A were based on the T-72 battle tank chassis, the TOS-2 Is based on a Ural wheeled all-wheel drive chassis to increase mobility.
The new system can be armed with up to 24 220 mm rockets just like the TOS-1 and TOS-1A. The rockets are available with smoke-incendiary or fuel air explosive warheads. They have a maximum range of up to ten kilometers.
Unlike the older TOS-1 and TOS-1A, the TOS-2 is equipped with a digitalized fire-control system, a modern sight, a navigation system and an electronic protection system from precision-guided weapons. The system is also equipped with its own crane, thus it does not near a separate reload vehicle.
The TOS-2 is currently being manufactured by NPO Splav. The system entered service with the Central Military District of Russia just last year.
The TOS system was developed to defeat infantry, armored vehicles and fortified constructions, such as trenches, tunnels and caves. The Russian military have been effectively using the TOS-1A systems against Kiev forces since the start of the operation in Ukraine.
They switched from a T-72 chassis to a truck chassis for increased mobility ? I could understand that its easier to move on the road, but as soon as you go off road, mobility generally goes to hell for a wheeled vehicle ?

No, those balloon tires make it easier to move on non-paved, wet, sandy and muddy surfaces, whereas tanks and many armored vehicle’s weight way too much to move in those conditions.
The explanation as I understand it is TOS-1 was built on a T-72 chassis because it only has like a 5-6 Km range so it needed armour protection and tracked mobility. NATO tanks have a range of up to 8KM. TOS 2 have a range of 10 KM … maybe they don’t see taking them as close to the frontline?

I thought the USA said no thermobaric rocket or vacuum bombs. This is going to piss off USA and NATO and may not be good for Russia if they use these sort of banned weapons. USA may consider this a chemical weapon, I’ve been hearing about it on the news, and USA said they would attack Russia if it uses chemical weapons.

Read the article carefully, it shoots multiple types of missiles, not just thermobaric. Thermobaric have not been banned for war, NATO and the US warned about using that particular type of missile in population centers. Military outposts and bases are legit targets.
NATO uses similar weapons throughout conflicts. These weapons are not banned. Like all weapons however, using them against civilian targets is prohibited. The exception to this rule is when civilian infrastructure becomes utilized by military forces. Such as using schools for storing ammunition, bridges for military logistics, and airports for launching aircraft and basing of operations for troops.

The USA has thermobaric bombs and used them in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. I remember one memorable device used on Tora Bora cave complex in 2002. They used them in Falluja and there’s even a thermobaric hellfire missile variant.

Russia has a whole array of thermobaric weapons from grenade launchers, to aerial bombs to cruise missiles with ranges of 1000KM … this one just lets you take out a couple of city blocks in a single volley and can be deployed at the pointy end.

The US wouldn’t want Ukraine to do that because it complicates things by a lot. It’s one thing to shoot artillery into border regions it’s another thing to strike cities deeper into Russia. The use of precision-guided 227mm rockets (M30, M31) and ATACMS missiles are not to be employed in mass volleys against broad area targets with M142 or M270 like Ukraine use MLRS today. Most likely Ukraine wouldn’t receive large quantities of ammunition and Ukraine would still mostly rely on the MLRS they use today. The precision-guided ammunition is expensive and that will keep the supply limited. It’s would be another tool for Ukraine but it wouldn’t really change anything.

One positive side effect of this war for Russia is that once this war has been won, which it will be soon, the Russian army will be full of battle hardened soldiers and officers, which will be bad news for Nato in the future — if they are foolish enough to threaten Putin and his homeland again. No more ring rust will be visible next time, if there is one? And the fact that many new Russian weapons like the TOS-2 have been baptised in this conflict with great success will strengthen their military force even more. So all the brave soldiers of Rus who selflessly have given their lives for their country will not have died in vain. They are all heroes of mankind, who gave their all to defeat the evil monsters from hell, Nato and its minions, and will be remembered for ever in the annals of military history.
