Russia’s strategic nuclear unmanned underwater vehicle is undergoing underwater trials, the state-run news agecy TASS reported citing own source.
“The nuclear propulsion system of the Poseidon drone is currently being tested in a sea area protected from surveillance by the likely opponent,” the source said.
The weapon system, called Poseidon, is propelled by a miniaturized nuclear reactor and capable of delivering strikes with nuclear weapons. The unmanned underwater vehicle is long-range submersible drone capable of travelling at high speed deep underwater thanks to a miniaturized nuclear reactor.
Poseidon was officially announced in March along with other upcoming state-of-the-art weapon systems. These weapons are designed to counter the development of anti-ballistic missile technologies by the US.
Nuclear powered Poseidon drone is more bad news for the NATO navies and their naval bases.
Perhaps one of them could make a Port Visit to New York :)

Where is the Fleet testing outside possible monitoring? Probably not in the Arctic this time of year with ice complicating recovery in case of breakdown. It would have to be deep water, so not the Baltic. The Black Sea and Pacific Fleet areas are scouted heavily. Lake Baikal is by now iced over, right? I’m at a loss as to testing location, unless it’s being tested by special purpose submarine in some distant Southern Ocean, like 1000km South of Rapa Nui or something like that. Just a guess, anyone have a better or more informed idea?

Yes, but “sea area” encompasses a lot of places. That was my question and brainstorm. Where, especially this time of year, can the Russian Navy test such an important weapon that they don’t want observed, even acoustically from some distance?
Cold weather is not a factor for the Russian Pacific and Northern fleets, they need a relatively large area that they they can keep it sanitized. My take is the Pacific. Most likely they will cordon the area with surface ships and subs, the Pacific fleet has the resources for such a task.

Since it’s the first underwater trial, at this stage it doesn’t need to be tested in deep sea. I think wherever they test it, it would be inside Russian waters. There are several submarine bases and a few of them have roofs (well, mountains as roofs) like Balaklava (now museum) and the one near Vladivostok.
I couldn’t find the type of propulsion. Everywhere they say it’s a high speed vessel but don’t mention how high, so it’s not clear if it’s a conventional nuclear vessel (meaning a nuclear reactor and electric engine) or a nuclear propulsion jet, like their new missile which may achieve speeds higher than a propeller or screw driven vessel.
Although nuclear reactors are usually manned, there are several examples of small reactors in unmanned space probes and satellite like Kosmos series or SNAP (it’s reactor malfunctioned less than 2 months), they’re prone to faults due to the lack of monitoring and maintenance.
Thanks. I’m betting pumpjet. And everyone has been focused on it’s crazy top speed and range but I’m betting that for most of it’s journey it can go deep, go slow and go quiet. Then closing on the target or a coastline it leaps up past 50 knots. Just guessing but the fact that Russian MOD didn’t even hint at that type of attack pattern only reinforces my belief in that concept.
Surely though it has to be tested in open water, soon. And away from Russian and British sensors and submarines, by several hundred kilometers. And be sure about it. So even if this test sticks to the scenario you spelled out they still have an oncoming test venue problem. This weapon’s sound profile is just too important to expose.
You may want to fix the typo (away from Russian and British sensors). Bad news for eavesdroppers is, if it’s a nuclear jet, there’s no sound signature because the jet has no moving part, no cavity, no bubbles, nothing! The best way to find it probably would be triangulating it’s radio but what if it goes most of it’s journey pre-planned by Glonass, internal guidance or other means and establishes contact at the destination or very short bursts on the way? It would be nightmare.

Sea of Okhotsk would be fairly safe from the Americans.
I tossed that over in my head but read a book a few years back by former American submariners detailing special ops in the Okhotsk. Perhaps it is better defended now with sensors and the like.
Sea of Okhotsk would be my guess. That’s where they hide their strategic ballistic missile subs untouchable by outside forces.
