The Russian fifth-generation fighter Su-57 performed test flights with functional mock-ups of a new hypersonic missile, a source in the military-industrial complex told Russian state oulet RIA.

“As part of the tests, the test Su-57 fighter jet performed several flights with functional mass-dimensional models of the new Russian intra-fuselage hypersonic missile. Prior to that, the new product was tested in the internal compartment of the fighter on the ground,” the agency’s source said.

He clarified that the mock-ups differ from standard ammunition in the absence of engines, rocket fuel and warheads, but fully correspond to them in size, shape and weight.

“At the same time, homing heads and electric circuits are installed on functional analogs to check the interface of the ammunition electronics with the onboard equipment of the carrier aircraft,” the source said.

The interlocutor noted that the first throw tests of new missiles are planned with the use of the Su-57 in the near future.

The source did not disclose the characteristics of the ammunition, but noted that they are small. According to the interlocutor, these missiles provide a maneuverable flight at hypersonic speed for a long time.

The new weapons belong to the air-to-surface class and are designed to engage priority targets such as enemy air and missile defense targets, radar stations, cruise and tactical ballistic missile launchers.

The Tactical Missile Armament Corporation (KTRV) didn’t comment on the situation. The United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) also provided no response on the matter.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on February 9th, announced that the basis of the Russian non-nuclear deterrent forces would be hypersonic missile systems of various bases, while at an operational mobilization meeting with the leadership of the Armed Forces.

The Su-57 is a fifth generation fighter designed to destroy all types of air, ground and surface targets. Developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau (part of the UAC of the Rostec State Corporation), made its first flight in 2010. The Su-57 has high maneuverability, the latest avionics and low visibility (stealth technology).

The first serial contract for the supply of 76 Su-57 aircraft to the troops was signed within the framework of the Army forum in the summer of 2019. The first warplane under this agreement was handed over to the Russian Armed Forces in December 2020. Additional purchases of the latest fighters are planned.

The substantial difference between Western and Russian war vehicles is that while the latter are built to be used, the Western ones are designed to be continuously under maintenance and generate money for the MIC, usability is not all that important when we talk about money.

The fuel of the Russian hypersonic weapons must be extremely exotic stuff… Is it a nuclear-uranium mix?

Lone Ranger

They are probaby two stage, first stage is regular solid fuel booster than reaching Mach 3+ it switches to air breathing ramjet propulsion.

FlorianGeyer

Its vodka derived fuel :) Its also ticks the Green box for the UN.

A smaller version of the Khinzhal is being considered for the Suk 57. Since Russia perfected the hypersonic technologies, any air to surface missile can be hypersonic, as well as air air missiles with speeds reaching Mach 9-10, a lot faster than current R37 or R33.

If they don’t hurry, China will be the champ of Hypersonics

China is testing a hypersonic glide vehicle delivered by a missile, I don’t think they have any operational hypersonic weapons. Composite materials are needed to withstand temperatures of up to 2000 degrees Celsius.
