Russian Tu-160 strategic supersonic bombers have been armed with the advanced Kh-BD cruise missiles with a range exceeding 6,500 kilometers, according to a video published by the Russian Defense Ministry on September 16.
“[A bomber] carries a Kh-BD missile with a range of over 6,500 kilometers,” Russia’s Long-Range Aviation Commander Lieutenant General Sergey Kobylash said during a visit by Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to the Knevichi airfield in Russia’s Far East.
Shoigu then revealed that each bomber is equipped with two internal rotary launchers each holding six Kh-BD cruise missiles.
The Tu-160 is the largest and heaviest combat aircraft, the fastest bomber in use and the largest and heaviest variable-sweep wing airplane ever flown.
Aside from its range and the fact that it is derivative from the Soviet Kh-55 cruise missile, very little is known about the Kh-BD. The cruise missile can reportedly be armed with a conventional or a nuclear warhead.
During the same tour, Lt. Gen. Kobylash revealed that the missiles of the Tu-22M3 long-range supersonic bombers have been updated to receive a new payload with an increased weight up to 1,700 kilograms.
“The next aircraft is Tu-22M3. We have updated this missile with a new payload which will increase its capacity to 1,700 kilos,” the commander told the Russian defense minister Shoigu and the North Korean leader.
The Tu-22M3 is a long-range multi-mode missile-carrying bomber designed to engage ground and naval targets across the entire range of the aircraft’s speed from high, medium and low altitudes.
Lt. Gen. Kobylash didn’t reveal the type of the missile. However, it is safe to assume that he was talking about the Kh-32 supersonic air-launched cruise missile, which has a range of 600–1000 kilometers. The missile is derived from the Soviet Kh-22.
Kim Jong Un arrived in Russia earlier this week and held extensive talks with President Vladimir Putin. Military cooperation was one of the main points of the talks.
By revealing the latest upgrades to its strategic bombers in the presence of the North Korean leader, Russia is not just sending a warning to its enemies but also a message of strength to its allies and partners around the globe.

tu-160 strategic bombers are nuclear weapon carrying supersonic flying combat platforms, their purpose is to launch attacks on targets and return if possible, reload and carry on, 6500+km is only the maximum range of the nuclear capable kh-bd cruise missile.
