Earlier this week, reports from military sources in Syria suggested that a US attack against the Syrian Army near the Syria-Iraq border was to be launched “very soon,” though it was unclear what such an attack would entail exactly.
A military monitor told Sputnik reporter and columnist Suliman Mulhem on Friday that the prospect of a US attack against Syria is looking “unlikely for now,” citing his informed military sources as saying they believe the threat level has been downgraded due to recent warnings by Russian officials to the US.
The reporter’s own source in the Syrian Army General Command was unable to confirm this latest development, nor the initial threat of an impending US attack in Syria.
The monitor also reported that many of his sources in the Syrian Air Defense Force (SyADF) are still on high alert, but suggested that the current threat is primarily from Israeli warplanes.
In recent days, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova described Washington’s threats and hawkish stance as “unacceptable,” while Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov issued a warning to the US.
“We’ve warned and warned the US that these plans must be unconditionally refused. Any such unlawful use of force, similar to what happened almost a year ago at the Shairat air base, would be an act of aggression against a sovereign state, as defined by the relevant article of the UN Charter,” Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Tuesday.
Syrian Ambassador to Russia Riyad Haddad told Sputnik on March 23 that the Arab state’s air defenses are ready to deal with an attack.
“We are ready for any possible situation that Syria may face. Our army is prepared, as well as air defense forces, we are ready to repel any attack in order to preserve the sovereignty on our territory and to protect our people,” Ambassador Riyad Haddad told Sputnik.
The SyADF has played a small, but important role throughout the ongoing multi-sided conflict. The force has mainly been tasked with identifying and destroying militant drones, but has also downed two military jets – a Turkish F-4 Phantom reconnaissance jet in 2012, and an Israeli F-16 multirole fighter jet earlier this year.
Additionally, Syrian air defenses intercepted a number of tomahawk cruise missiles fired by the US during its strike on the Shairat airbase in 2017.
Military analyst Peto Lucem expressed his doubts about a potential largescale US attack against the Syrian Army.
“I don’t expect a largescale attack on Syrian ground forces by the US. To achieve this, the US Air Force (USAF) would first have to attack SAM bases, radar installations and airfields – this is a common tactic. Hitting Syrian Army ground forces in a manner that would diminish their combat value significantly would last for at least several days, if not weeks,” the analyst told Sputnik.
“Even if this phase was successful, the militant remnants in Syria are no longer capable to capitalize on this, as they are very weak. Therefore, for the US to seize and hold territory it will need to deploy a significant number of boots on the ground, and it’s very unlikely they will be willing to do that,” he concluded.
The appointment of the Uber War Hawk ‘John Bolton’ as adviser to Trump is a worrying event though and US/NATO provocations will only increase as their proxy terrorists capitulate.

Air attacks without boots on the ground are ineffective, US is highly allergic to casualties and downed planes, I think Syrian air defenses integrated with Russian air assets including EW would make the skies over Syria perilous for US aircraft. Just do not present them with any sizable targets on the ground, and if there are any “sizable targets” they are meant to trap/attract US aircraft into a well established field of fire. US hubris would suffer greatly if a few of their planes are shot down, without inflicting any serious damage. As far as cruise missile attacks, we have seen the rate of success of the Tomahawk missiles last year, since then the Syrian air defenses have been consolidated and integrated, and the Tomahawk would embarrass itself even more.

Heres what actually happened…………….A small area across the Euphrates north-east of Deir Ezzor had been taken by Syrian government forces months ago. It is near some oilfields which the U.S. wants to keep away from the Syrian government. The valuable oil and gas fields are currently in the hands of local Arab tribes who earlier worked with the Islamic State and are now allied with the YPG/PKK Kurds under the name Syrian Democratic Forces. The YPG/PKK is a registered US terrorist organisation which the CIA renamed SDF for obvious reasons. Local deals were made between the Syrian government side and local Arabs holding the oil fields. When the exchange started the U.S. simply told the SDF to move out of the way and when the government aligned groups started to take over the field the U.S. bombed them.
There is no way you can coordinate B-52 strategic bombers, the flying artillery battery AC-130, as well as MQ-9 drones, F-15 fighters and AH-64 helicopters in a few hours. This was a premeditated attack planned a few days prior. More than likely planned when the US got whispers of a controlled hand over by Local Arabs holding the oil fields.

The US already has an invasion force poised to invade Syria via the border with Jordan. The US base at Al-Tanf will be the staging post for this invasion and they’ll expand and beef it up just before they do. They already have the equipment in Jordan they need to do it [as quickly and secretly as they can], but the Russians will probably see it coming, and I’m sure they’re already anticipating it. But don’t expect a massive army to invade because a token force is all that will be required for this operation, they already have several groups of fighters already waiting there. The large pocket of [so called] Isis fighters that Assad can’t dislodge from Homs, have been conveniently using the 55 km exclusion zone at the US base at Al-Tanf, to retreat to every time they’re threatened by Assad’s forces, and that’s no coincidence, the Russians know that too. They will quickly disappear when the invasion begins, rebranding themselves as legitimate rebels and join any forces the US has fighting against Assad. I’m sure the rebels in Homs and also suspect the ones in Dara, will all join in on the fun too, so there may possibly be fighting on 3 different fronts, which would be disastrous for Assad. If this were to happen the Russians would have to do the unthinkable, and possibly unforgivable, making large parts of Syria unlivable for hundreds of years. Much better to make an example of Erdogan and wipe out half of his military infrastructure with them, hopefully avoiding heavily populated civilian areas but sending a very clear message to the rest of the world. WW3 if it starts will mean the end of Turkey as we know it, they will be the first place nukes start falling and the US and NATO won’t risk retaliating with nukes no matter what happens. When they’re actually faced with the choice of either losing Turkey or losing everything, I know what they’ll do, nothing.
