Russia’s Project 885M (Yasen-M) nuclear-powered submarines will be able to salvo-launch Kalibr-PL and Oniks cruise missiles, TASS reported.

“The Project 885M nuclear-powered submarine Kazan made a salvo launch of two missiles from a vertical launcher and a torpedo tube during state trials,” an unnamed source said.

In November 2020, “the Kazan made a salvo during state trials, which confirmed the possibility of such launches,” the source said.

A Kalibr-PL cruise missile was fired from a vertical launcher against a coastal target while an Oniks missile was launched from a torpedo tube against a surface target.

Both targets were successfully struck, the source specified.

It was reported in early April that shipbuilders would deliver the improved Project 885M (Yasen-M) lead nuclear-powered submarine Kazan prior to July 25th, 2021.

The Project 885M lead nuclear-powered submarine Kazan was floated out at the Sevmash Shipyard on March 31, 2017. The sub entered shipbuilders’ sea trials on September 25, 2018.

The production timeframe suffered several delays for the Project 885M submarines. The nuclear-powered sub failed to fulfil the planned program of state trials on schedule.

Project 885/885M submarines are armed with Kalibr-PL and Oniks cruise missiles and will eventually carry Zircon hypersonic missiles as their basic weapons.

As per reports from March 2021, nuclear-sub builder Sevmash (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) is forming the hulls of the seventh and eighth Project 885M (Yasen-M) nuclear submarines which were laid down on July 20, 2020.

The first test launch of the hypersonic Zircon from a submarine – the Yasen class (not Yasen-M) nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine Severodvinsk – will not be completed until June 2021.

“The first test launch of Zircon from Severodvinsk can be performed at the earliest in June. There is no exact date for the start of tests yet,” a TASS source said back in March.

According to another TASS source, “a decision has been made to speed up the tests of the Zircons, which will now run in parallel with the ships and submarines” “The frigate will fire twice during the year as part of flight design tests, and up to four times in the framework of joint state tests. In parallel, in the summer, flight tests of Zircon will begin from a submarine. It is planned to carry out up to four launches, the first from the surface position. The tests will begin with Severodvinsk. In case of their success, it is planned to take Zircon into service with both types of platforms in the first half of 2022 “he said.

What’s next? Being able to submerge?

Lone Ranger

Salvo launch means basically at the same time. No sequential. Would be a first amongst any sub.

SOF

I would be asking that question for a US submarine built in the last decade.

Supreme Blyat

What keeps you from?

SOF

They may end up ‘live testing’ the 3M22 Zircon on that submarine ahead of June 2021 if things in Ukraine don’t settle down.

klove and light

russian forces dont need Zircon in any circumstances in a military confrontation in ukraine……..

ukraine just serves as “pawn” or “cannon fodder” for british zionism………. in the case of military confrontation in ukraine, the ukrainian army will get utterly destroyed in no less than 7 days……….that is the plan for british zionism to ratch up the confrontation between Eu states and russia on ALL levels, espeically the nord stream 2 pipeline.

The hope WE all must have, is that higher ups in the ukrainian military wont take the bate, but that will be very difficult to achieve, due to the dire situation in ukraine and the millions they get to push ahead with this absolute CRAZY spaced out idea of confronting russia militarily.

SOF

I usually go with what Russell Bentley says, since he’s actually had gun battles against the UAF and is well-informed of the actual ground situation as well as aware of the on-goings like NATO’s Defender Europe 2021 and how it all relates. If Southfront wanted an accurate contributor for the Ukrainian situation, they would go to Russell Bentley.

They don’t want war, but are sick of being indiscriminately shelled. The locals want this to end and if it takes a big fight so be it.

Lone Ranger

Russia could EMP them back to the stone age. No need to fire a single bullet or missile. Ukropnazis won’t even have an effin working car.

johnny rotten

The important thing is that the metal supplier of the submarine hulls is not Bradken Inc. of Kansas City, the one that has cheated for decades the US Navy by falsifying the resistance tests of the hulls, which even today cannot say, what the real ones are resistance limits of American submarines.

Lone Ranger

Indeed lol. And nobody noticed it for decades. Quality control must be almost as good as on the Flop-35 project. If they are lucky they can emulate the performance of WWII era German U-boats…

SOF

Maybe Aquaman can be the quality control tester LOL. One of the only recent movies I can say satisfied my entertainment needs.

Lone Ranger

It was a solid movie. Liked it too.

Ricky Miller

Yes. There are problems all over the American industrial base for submarines. Yesterday at USNI News website an article detailed that some parts of the Virginia class submarines are wearing out way faster than expected, causing a major strain in the industrial supply chain for American submarines.

Jesus

It is not only Bradken inc. that shortchanged the military, military contractors have an army of lobbyists working on Congress pushing their pet projects and obfuscating issues if irregularities and shortcomings in the contracts become known.

Lone Ranger

Ah I love the Yasen class, similar shape to the Skull which on the other hand was inspired by the Alfa and Lyra classes. Best SSN on the planet current. Also my all time fav will always be the Alfa class 🤗

SOF

Project 941 “Typhoon” was interesting that it had the conning tower placed behind the launch tubes. That was my favorite because they dared to make something that big. A big old submarine would be good for launching autonomous torpedoes like the Status-6 Poseidon without putting itself in harm’s way.

Lone Ranger

Yeah the Typhoon was a beast. Twin hull+,outer-inner hull,+twin reactors. A single boat had enough firepower to vaporize a whole continent. Status-6 autonóm subs/torpedos are already deployed on the Belgorod class(modded Oscar class) I think first boat is already finished they are working on the 2nd and 3rd. Two Status-6 is enough to destroy the east or west coasts of the U.S.

SOF

I saw the black and white image of them constructing the thing and you could put a whole city district in there. Its too bad they found it too expensive to modernise all but the “Dmitry Donskoi”. But I guess sentiments have to come last for efficient use of money in defense.

Russian Navy announced it ordered 30 Poseidons in January 2019. Knowing how military works, public announcements of ‘buying’ usually means ‘ready to use’ or being delivered. And its been 2 years since. Russia’s domination of the Arctic means a launch there and Russia only needs to tell it to go ‘West’ or ‘East’.

Its a good thing they made it a robot that can be programmed to go on its own. Crush depth is also a factor. The ‘small reactor’ for less noise means it can take its time to sneak up to the port as faster speeds risks detection.

Lone Ranger

Yeah for a price of the modernization of one Typhoon you can build a Borei and a Yasen class, brand new… Yeah 30 sounds about right. One sub can carry 4 of them I think. So three subs can carry 12, and you can rearm them for a second run if needed.

SOF

From the HI Sutton website the first sub modified to launch these giant torpedoes (and these guys are 30x the size of a standard torpedo) the Belgorod could carry six.

I read somewhere else (not on this image) with two launch tubes the torpedoes are on a carriage similar to a pistol-revolver loading system.

It appears the Belgorod was made like a Swiss Army knife so they could test all these new systems at once and also to serve ultra-secret missions by the Main Directorate for Deep-Sea Research (GUGI). Science research similar to what NOAA does seems to be a part of this mission but for military applications. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/e17c6d6f80642d4b80d9109de7c4afb212528f994c600f969272a041e2e6fce7.png

Lone Ranger

Wow that thing is really loaded 😳 Its really like a swiss army knife. Wonder what else upgrades it got… Probably can dive deeper than a standard Oscar II, and its probably also more silent. Im only guessing now…

SOF

I am guessing they probably could find the origin of ‘The Bloop’

Description based on one of the staff who was their when it happened followed by the sound at about the 5:10 mark https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jAs_u6LpcQ

Lone Ranger

I read about it. Its unlikely the sound was created by a biological life form, the distance and the energy of the sound wave would estimate something in the 1km+ in diameter, that’s too big in my opinion. On the other hand it could have been produced by an yet unknown propulsion system or a giant door to deep sea base, be it Human or alien run.

Jesus

Maybe to retrofit a Thyphoon is an expensive proposition, it might cost as much as a Borey, however packing it with 150-200 cruise missiles of every type would be an awesome strike punch.

SOF

I looked up the Alfa-Class on Wikipedia, their liquid lead-bismuth reactors were unique in the way they could handle leaks. Maybe if they could somehow transfer that technology for for land based power plants we would have had a better safety record.

Lone Ranger

Yes I like the unique design. The only problem with liquid metal cooled reactors that once turned on you can’t turn it off else the liquid metal will solidify in the pipes and you can’t restart it. So that means no maintenance. Once the fission fuel is depleted you have to pull the whole reactor and replace it with a new one. That’s why it never caught on in civilian use. Advantages are is that they are very small, very high powered for their size, and can safely operate at higher temps, and like you said they are also safer because of no leaks.

Jim Allen

Fusion reactors. But, then they don’t produce Plutonium. No Plutonium, no nukes.

RD-180

he Yasen-M has torpedo tubes with a diameter of 533mm. The Oniks has a diameter of 700mm. How could the Kazan launch Oniks missiles from torpedo tubes?

SOF

Problem is Southfront seems to get things mixed up.

The graph above says that the P-800 Oniks will be launched from vertical launch tubes, so the launch profile is like SLBMs. Wikipedia also states the Oniks is submarine launched capable, so the issue is how its launched.

From third paragraph: “A Kalibr-PL cruise missile was fired from a vertical launcher against a coastal target while an Oniks missile was launched from a torpedo tube against a surface target.”

Having to rely on donations while lying Zio-press get billions of state funds is a terrible thing.

Jim Allen

Valid point, possibly a translation error.

Jesus

They have vertical launcher system incorporated in the hull.
