ZALA Aero Group, a subsidiary of Russia’s defense giant Kalashnikov Concern, announced on August 26 that it had successfully tested an innovative system designed to prevent collisions and avoid obstacles for civilian drones.

In a press release, the drone company said that the system is made of multiple cameras and powered by artificial intelligence.

“The system uses artificial intelligence algorithms to analyze data and independently decides what to do: reduce speed or change course to avoid a collision,” it added.

ZALA noted that drones equipped with the system will be able to “adapt with each flight, becoming smarter and more precise.”

Notably, the company acknowledged in the press release that a similar system has been already developed for its strike and reconnaissance drones.

Reports from earlier this year revealed that Russian drones were being equipped with an AI-powered camera system designed to protect from interceptors. The drone equipped with the system executes automatic evasive maneuvers in real time, without operator input, once a threat is detected, similarly to the obstacle evading system unveiled by ZALA.

ZALA was among the companies testing the protection system. The system was seen in action on its Z-16 reconnaissance, and is reported to be installed on the Lancet loitering munition also.

These obstacle evading and protection systems highlight the progress Russian drone developers have made since the start of the special military operation in Ukraine. Within three years, the country has become one of the world’s leaders in the development and production of unmanned systems.
