S-300 & Other Military Equipment Delivered To Syria: Russian Defense Minister

Illustrative image

The S-300 air defense system and dozens additional pieces of military equipment have been delivered to the Syrian military, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu told President Vladimir Putin on October 2.

According to the defense minister, the Syrian military received a total of 49 pieces of military equipment, including radars, control vehicles and four launchers.

Shoigu stated that the delivery was finished a day ago, on October 1. The training of Syrian S-300 crews will take about 3 months.

The defense minister added that Russia has significantly boosted the electronic warfare system. There are now two zones: the close area – within 50km and the far zone – up to 200km from the main directions of Israeli strikes on Syria.

Russia has also started setting up a uninted network to coordinate Russian and Syrian air defense means and measures. The delivery of equipment and the training of Syrian servicemen are now ongoing. The united air defense network is set to be established by October 20.

Finally but just 4 launchers, where to add them do defend first I mean 1 or 2 in damascus 1 in latakia and 1 in aleppo or deir ez zor or who knows, probably just with the coastal Latakia and damascus its enough that would defend whole western Syria and some of the mid Syria from the S-300 only beside that Pantsir-S1 are all over the place.

Syria will be free from western sponsors of terrorism and free from western politics. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/9b970b03a5b49656a7511226b9a071ebea2b2be4a06b7eee5f27946b2aafca6b.gif

S Melanson

Oh but notice the article states Russian systems will be linked to coordinate with Syrian systems. This means the denial of air space around Syria de facto includes Russian systems and therefore, the S-400 systems as well.

I posted in an earlier article the major implications of integration of Russian and Syrian systems and will repost here.

Hisham Saber

Unbeknownst to the arrogant Israeli’s, they have , unfortunately for them, put Hezbollah under the defensive umbrella of the S-300’s and EW systems. Hezbollah now has but to coordinate with Syria and Iraq and Iran on when to finally deliver the knockout blow to the Zionist experiment.

S Melanson

Yes, very good point and the systems can cover the occupied Golan to facilitate liberation, which is coming.

BMWA1

Some air defense agreement between Syria-Lebanon needed asap.

Rob

Well done Russia. Congratulation to Assad and to his nation. Now the defence of Syria with S-300 has uncompromised.

Jesus

Syria got more than 4 launchers, 4 launchers constitute a battery. It must be a typo error.

Vas

Mr Soigu probably meant 4 batteries, each S-300 battery typically has 4-6 launchers(usually 6), plus radar, command station etc in each battery. He also said 49 pieces of equipment, that includes also additional Buk-M2E and Pantsir(some say even Tor-M2).

Conglomera .

Sorry to disappoint you but the launchers will stay together, they form a single battalion.

Val Shadowhawk

Well done, sister Russia!

Tudor Miron

Russia is not a sister. It is mother Russia – Матушка Россия. When I say this I do not intend to offend you but to point out the meaning of Motherland in Russian civilization.

Actually I’m having fun here

Tudor Miron

You don’t have moral capacity to understand what I’m talking about. Master race? That nonsense works in Judaism but it is unacceptable in Russian culture. Russian nation is inclusive – many ethnic groups coexisting together on the basis of fairness.

occupybacon

Yeah that’s why the only Slavic nations that don’t hate Russia are the ones that never bordered it.

S Melanson

well Russia cannot hold a candle to the accomplishments of the US and most Western European nations that managed to be hated by nations that share their borders AND nations that never shared a border.

The western european nations are gentlemen, russians are henchmen

Trump and the Israel Nazi government must go.

Dr. Ronald Cutburth

Interesting there are now rings around the Israel threat. It seems as the Syrian and Russian air defense systems are linking up. that there will be Russians at most of those sights. The US dare not launch cruise missiles toward Syria.

S Melanson

Yes, this is one of the most important outcomes of Russian retaliation. Go ahead Bibi, I dare you!

S Melanson

I posted this in an earlier article and think it relevant here – I have added some comments and they are in square brackets:

——————————— there has been a lot of debate about the implications of the Russian response to the downing of the IL-20 and loss of 15 Russian personnel. This is my take on the implications.

First and foremost, the MoD blamed Israel from day one and has provided a string of statements hostile to Israel in contrast to Putin’s initial conciliatory approach. The hard line taken towards Israel has clearly prevailed with the MoD controlling the narrative with regular announcements by Shoigu, the Russian Defense Minister, on retaliatory steps. It also appears the MoD is making the determination of what retaliatory measures are to be taken.

The key retaliation measures include:

Establishment of a no-fly zone over Syria and Syrian territorial waters – applies to any hostile aircraft regardless of nationality – measures to implement the no fly zone are as follows:

Syria gets S-300 Systems Syria gets additional state of the art short and medium range air defense systems Enhanced management systems that had only been available to the Russian military Centralized – Russian and Syrian systems will be integrated and work together to establish no-fly zone

Implications to consider:

Tudor Miron commented that Russian operatives will be embedded with the new systems. I agree given the advanced systems being provided. If Russian personnel are embedded with the new systems, this presents a problem for Israel attempting to destroy the systems. Israeli jets targeting Syrian air defense systems will put Russians in harms way which could provoke a Russian response. [the article above states three months training which means Russian personnel will be working with the Syrians]

If Israel does not degrade the air defense systems and attempts to attack Iranian assets in Syria, Israel will face a far more robust air defense system making such missions very risky. Israeli impunity is over as Iran enjoys the benefits of the new systems to protect them from Israeli airstrikes.

Further, integration of air defense systems coupled with Russian personnel embedded with Syrian systems tells me that the no fly zone is being enforced by both Syrian and Russian air defense assets under centralized coordination and control – meaning that the S-400 systems can be considered in play to enforce the no fly zone. Clearly, we are witnessing the establishment of a formidable air defense system in Syria that presents a highly credible deterrent to would-be aggressors. [this article basically confirms this]

The Russians are making it very clear that any aircraft that take hostile actions towards Syria do so at their own peril. Israel has stated they will continue striking Syria as before.

Conclusion – Israel and Russia are presently on a collision course and when they collide, all hell will break loose.

Shahna

Only 4 launchers? Excuse me while I feel a little deflated after all that buildup.

S Melanson

Yes, until you consider the Russian systems which will coordinate with the Syrian systems – including the S-400. Syrian airspace is CLOSED.

Hisham Saber

4 launchers, im sure more to come. Each launcher has 4 tubes. S-300’s are used only for lucrative targets, like the F-35’s or F-16’s. Also strategic bombers. There are other systems as well. That’s a lot of missiles and downed planes. Plus, the new systems will all be integrated between the Russian and Syrian systems as one centralized system. That means you can include the S-400’s as well.

The Russians are not playing around anymore.

Graeme Rymill

No more to come:

“We have completed the delivery of the S-300 system,” Shoigu said Tuesday. The hardware supplied to Syria consisted of 49 pieces of military equipment, including radars, control vehicles and four launchers, he added. https://www.rt.com/news/440152-russia-delivers-s300-syria/

Hisham Saber

4 S-300 launchers, with 4 tubes each. Okay, but what they don’t say is how many actual missiles are being sent. And btw, the Syrian and Russian air defense systems are fully integrated now. Into essentially one system. Add on the all the other goodies, like all the EW systems and it will make it too expensive for any enemy to attack.

Graeme Rymill

“the Syrian and Russian air defence systems are fully integrated now” lol….the Russians said this had happened a year ago and look what just went and happened. http://tass.com/defense/962057

Hisham Saber

The little tiny apartheid entity occupying Palestine, known temporarily as Israel, is going to mess with Russia?

They couldn’t even handle a small militia known as Hezbollah in 2006, when 4500 Hezbollah fighters effectively routed 75,000 IDF troops and two armored battalions. They almost had their flagship sunk. And on top of that, they had total air superiority.

Israeli’s are pussies and Russia will take care of them in due time. At least get them back for their arrogance and insolence.

Sinbad2

It’s the guidance and control systems that are the key, and 4 launchers could shoot down 16 long range targets simultaneously. Then you have the Pantsirs for closer targets. How many aircraft do you think Israel could bring to bear at one time?

Hind Abyad

There’s only one Shahna from Africa, the best in a War room.

Shahna

LOL. Hullo Medi – how are you?

Hind Abyad

In Canada & cold. I come here for news i can trust. ;-)

Jim Bim

The Russian statement earlier said up to 8…so more to come. In the meantime the 4 launchers will be operated by Russians. The Syrians where trained in 2013, but the contract was canceled by Russia. The extra training is to operate the S-300 in a integrated sytem with the S-400.

RichardD

The key here is full integration into the Russian sat com network. This puts all of the hardware on land, in the air, and at sea under a unified command. If the S-300s are effective against most or all of Israel’s air assets. This in combination with improved capabilities from all of the other launchers on the ground, including S-200, Buk, Panstsir and the rest, should provide a considerable upgrade to Syria’s ability to defend it’s airspace not just from the Jews, but the US as well. I’m assuming that all or most of the equipment that Syria has been using so far, will be more effective with better radars and satellite up links. Targets that they couldn’t see before until they were close, can now be seen and planned for from pre launch and launch to interception.

The other issue required for effective deterrence is a change in the rules of engagement. If aircraft over Israel, Lebanon and NE Syria attack Syria. Then taking them down needs to be an option. I’m sure that the Jews have plans to test what they can and can’t get away with. The US isn’t going to hold Al-Tanf or NE Syria with 2,200 troops, and it’s unlikely that there will be a surge either. The only thing keeping Syria out of these areas is US air power. Once the baby rapers are neutralized, the US will be next. And that will be the end of the Jew world order partition program.

Luutzen

Only 4 S-300 launchers!

Way too little, to withstand Isreali attacks.

Hopefully they mean 4 batteries with 32 launchers at least.

RichardD

That’s 16 missiles. When was the last time that Israel attacked with more planes than that? I’m sure that the Russians will provide more on an as needed basis if these work out.

Luutzen

They can be taken out by low RDS missiles Israel has used before in Syria, by saturating the Pantsir’s + Thors.

RichardD

What is a low RDS missile, are you referring to glide bombs? The F-16s firing them will be in the water before those even land.

Luutzen

Low radar cross section missiles Israel has used before on Syrian military targets.

They get past Syrian missile defense about 30% in past occurrence.

But yes, the Israeli F-16’s could be fired at, but Russian central command is very cautious to shoot NATO – Israeli Jets, even at the cost of Russian soldiers-pilots.

RichardD

They’re launching missiles at IAF manned aircraft now. They’re just not hitting them often enough. Hopefully that will change. Do you have any links describing these types of missiles and their use in the Syrian war? The only type of ordnance similar to what you’re describing that I’m aware of having been used are mostly plastic glide bombs which have a small radar signature.

– GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb –

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GBU-39_Small_Diameter_Bomb

– ISRAELI AIR FORCE ALLEGEDLY USED GBU-39 SMALL DIAMETER BOMBS IN LAST NIGHT STRIKE ON SYRIA –

https://southfront.org/israeli-air-force-allegedly-used-gbu-39-small-diameter-bombs-in-last-night-strike-on-syria/

Luutzen

No other links, but the Southfront one.

RichardD

Those glide bombs are subsonic ordnance that take forever to hit their targets compared to the hypersonic missiles being fired at the planes dropping them. If the baby rapers try that again they’re going to lose planes if the S-300s are effective. And there goes the invincibility and sales of US aircraft against legacy Russian equipment, let alone state of the art equipment.

RichardD

The glide bombs were used against warehouses in Aleppo. I’m not aware of them ever taking out SAM batteries. So I don’t know where you’re getting that from.

Hind Abyad

Try this one? https://russia-insider.com/en/us-military-industrial-complexs-worst-nightmare-s-300-may-destroy-and-expose-f-35/ri24944?ct=t(Russia_Insider_Daily_Headlines11_21_2014)&mc_c

Tudor Miron

To launch those GBU-39 at a distance of 80-110km they will have to do it from 7000m and above. That will be very risky to do now.

RichardD

The S-200s were probably more effective than many people give them credit for at pushing back IAF attacks to more of a stand off distance. And the S-300s are said to be more effective than the S-200s at low altitude intercepts. Which is where most of the IAF attacks are originating from. It will be interesting to see what the IAF does or doesn’t do now that the improved missiles have been added to better command and control.

Tommy Jensen

All the best.

Sinbad2

Before people start screaming for more missiles, remember the objective is to stop Israel attacking, it’s not about going to war with Israel.

Luutzen

Only 4 S-300 launchers!!???

This is hopelessly inadequate to defend Syria’s airspace against Israel – NATO.

It must be 2 regiments or 4 batteries of 8 launchers as a minimim = 32 launchers.

Better 64 launchers will prevent Israeli airforce from attacking.

RichardD

It’s a starter set, and Syria is hardly defenseless. They took down 75% of the NATO missiles without S-300s and without full integration into the Russian sat com network. This is a big upgrade.

Luutzen

The Russian EW did take out the US cruise missiles in their last stage.

It’s Syrian propaganda to say they did it all, using S-200. A joke.

RichardD

It depends who you believe. I’m sure that EW was a factor. The US says none of the missiles were lost. Russian and Syrian reports are that SAM batteries fired 112 missiles taking down 71 out of 103 missiles and bombs used by NATO. I’d say that’s pretty good shootin from mostly legacy systems:

“the Syrian military does have some modern air defenses, including the Pantsir-S1 combined short-to-medium range surface to air missile (SAM) and anti-aircraft artillery system, the cruise missile attack was repelled mostly by upgrades of 30+ year old equipment, including variants of the Buk self-propelled missile system, the S-125 air defense system, and the S-200, an aging but tried and tested SAM introduced into the Soviet military in the late 1960s.”

– 71 Out of 103 Destroyed: Here’s How Syria’s Air Defense Repelled West’s Missiles –

https://sputniknews.com/military/201804141063558487-syria-air-defense-forces-analysis/

From the Russian Ministry of Defense:

“If we talk about the effectiveness of the restored Syrian air defense system with the participation of Russian specialists, I want to emphasize the following.

Reflecting the impact of all, 112 anti-aircraft guided missiles were spent. Of them:

“Pantsir” – 25 rockets were fired, 23 targets were hit; “Beech” – 29 missiles launched, 24 targets hit; “Wasp” – 11 missiles launched, 5 targets hit; S-125 – 13 rockets launched, 5 targets hit; “Strela-10″ – 5 missiles launched, 3 targets hit; “Square” – 21 missiles launched, 11 targets hit; S-200 – 8 rockets launched, targets unaffected. I should add that no one should be misled by the low rates of the C-200 anti-aircraft missile system.

This complex is designed to destroy primarily aerodynamic carriers of missiles – that is, aircraft.

Although not so long ago, it was this complex that destroyed the fighter of one of the neighboring states that attempted to violate the border of Syria’s airspace.

The rest of the complexes, also produced during the USSR, showed a very high efficiency, despite the fact that the targets hit had a high speed and a very small effective reflective surface.”

– Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov held a briefing for the media on the situation in Syria –

https://function.mil.ru/news_page/country/more.htm?id=12171611@egNews

Conglomera .

4 launchers is a joke, it does not even make up a single battalion (6 launchers).

Willing Conscience (The Truths

I feel like saying “it’s too little and too late” but that’s not fair, maybe I’m better off saying “it’s better than nothing”, or even “better late than never”, or maybe the most accurate thing I could say is “at least we’ve got them now if we need them”, I would have preferred to say “we dare you to try” 3 years ago. There’s one more saying that comes to mind though and it pains me to say it but I have to, “they’re only just for show”, and God do I hope they’re not. After all that’s happened, the last incident with the spy plane should be the last time the Russians fail to respond to Israeli or Coalition attacks, failing to do so now would harm Putin’s standing with his own military personnel, and also discredit his reputation even further with the people who are supporting him. Just for once I’d like to see Putin draw a red line in the sand, dare anyone to cross it, and then punish them if they dared to. I’m now patiently waiting to see what happens next time there’s an incident, but I’m not holding my breath waiting, I’ve done that too many time already.

Russia seems to be using their soldiers as Human Shields. They know that if there were no Russians manning S-300s, Israel would just destroy them. This works because Israel and Russia are friends, but would not work elsewhere.

John

They don’t seem to be ‘friends’ anymore.

Sinbad2

“Israel and Russia are friends”

Very funny, Israel having friends pure Seinfeld.

Abe Manhattan

You think Israel could bomb Iran in Syria over 100 times in the past year without Russian OK ??
