SAA Major Offensive: Artillery Fire Exchanges Reported In Lattakia, Hama & Southern Idlib

On July 24, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) exchanged artillery fire with remaining militants in the northwestern region of Greater Idlib.

In the morning, the army’s artillery pounded militants’ positions in the towns of Deir Sunbul, al-Ruwaihah, Benin, Fleifel, Kafar Aweed and San in southern Idlib as well as in the towns of al-Zeyarah and Mashik in northwestern Hama.

The militants responded by launching improvised rocket-assisted munition at SAA positions in the town of Barakah in northern Lattakia. Al-Qaeda-affiliated Ansar al-Islam was reportedly behind the attack.

“There is no information on any casualties,” the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

Recent reports revealed that the SAA was preparing to launch a new ground operation in Greater Idlib. Army units took offensive positions in the region on July 23.

Greater Idlib militants, led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, are now preparing for the SAA’s upcoming attack. Militants in southern Idlib and northwestern Hama were placed on high-alert. Furthermore, fresh reinforcements were deployed in the two areas.

Turkey committed to neutralize terrorist groups in Greater Idlib under the  agreement with Russia signed on March 5. Despite maintaining a capable force in the region, Ankara is doing nothing to fulfill this commitment. This forces the SAA and its allies to take action.
