Fresh satteilte images reveal that Russia has almost finished the construction of new aircraft shelters in its Hmeimim airbase in Syria. This effort was first revealed in October 2018 amid an increase of militant UAV attacks on the Russian facility. While a vast majority of these attacks was successfully repelled by local air defense forces, the Russian side is undertaking actions to increase safety of its air group in the war-torn country.

Make them thick enough and a reinforced concrete structure will do fine. Nazi U-Boat pens did fine against Allied bombing. And the British threw 10 ton bombs at them. Modern reinforced concrete construction is even better then back then. Saddam’s problem was that his structures were built by western companies during the war with Iran, when Iraq was the West’s darling, that then briefed the US coalition on their construction and weak spots. These are mere 5 meter blast walls, separating the planes. The headchoppers last year lobbed some 122mm rockets that took out 8 Ruski washing machines as they were lined up unprotected parade style. It took the dumb Ruski’s one year to even put concrete blast walls between planes, let alone build hardened pens with 4 meter curved rebar concrete and decoys. To build blast proof pens extensive ground excavation and earth moving is needed and it costs money and strategic planning.

This is sensible defensive tactic and should apply to all Syrian and Iranian airbases. Taking advantage of terrain like mountains is also feasible for underground parking and rearming. The late Shah, who was an accomplished pilot directed the construction of the Iranian superbase TAB 10 at Chah Bahar which is almost all underground and can withstand any conventional attack. It literally controls access to the Persian Gulf and in 1979 had over 100 F-14A and F-4E based there. There are two runways at this base. Both are asphalt. The majority of the facility is located underground blended in with hilly coastal topography of Persian Gulf. Reported at the base as of 2018 were the 101st Tactical Fighter Squadron, flying F-4D aircraft, and a detachment of Su-24 Fencer aircraft. A base SAR flight with AB-212 and Bell 214 helicopters was also reported.
