WAR HAWK PETRAEUS COMES OUT OF RETIREMENT TO RECOMMEND POURING FUEL ON SYRIA’S FIRE
Retired U.S. General David Petraeus, credited with the success of the so-called “surge” strategy of victory in Iraq where thousands of additional troops were thrown into the battle to pacify Iraq, is now advocating the same “solution” for the Syria. The former General’s rapid rise through the Army ranks had some believing that he would make a future run for the Presidency. In 2011, the General was appointed Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) by President Barack Obama in a move that some believe was intended to keep Petraeus from running against Obama in 2012. Petraeus headed the CIA until forced to resign in November, 2012 when it was discovered that he had given his mistress access to classified government documents. Now that the Obama administration’s policy of “irregular warfare” including the arming of Islamic militants in Syria to overthrow the elected government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad appears to be failing, retired General Petraeus is once again promoting a policy of dramatic militarization escalation. The General believes that seizing large parts of Syria by sending 70,000 additional U.S. troops and creating “no-fly zones” is the proper way to finally bring peace and stability to the region. The good General’s motto seems to be “If at first your surge don’t seize, then surge, surge again”.
