Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE, & Bahrain Cut Diplomatic Ties, Shut All Borders With Qatar

Originally appeared at ZeroHedge

Just days after president Trump left the region, a geopolitical earthquake is taking place in the Middle East tonight as the rift between Qatar and other members of the (likely extinct) Gulf Cooperation Council explodes with Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt cutting all diplomatic ties with Qatar accusing it of “spreading chaos,” by funding terrorism and supporting Iran.

The dispute between Qatar and the Gulf’s Arab countries started over a purported hack of Qatar’s state-run news agency. It has spiraled since, and appears to be climaxing now… just days after President Trump left the region.

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE, & Bahrain Cut Diplomatic Ties, Shut All Borders With Qatar

As Al Arabiya reports, Bahrain has announced it is cutting diplomatic ties with Qatar, according to a statement carried on Bahrain News Agency.

The statement on Monday morning said Bahrain decided to sever ties with its neighbor “on the insistence of the State of Qatar to continue destabilizing the security and stability of the Kingdom of Bahrain and to intervene in its affairs”.

The statement also said Qatar’s incitement of the media and supporting of terrorist activities and financing groups linked to Iran were reasons behind the decision.

“(Qatar has) spread chaos in Bahrain in flagrant violation of all agreements and covenants and principles of international law Without regard to values, law or morals or consideration of the principles of good neighborliness or commitment to the constants of Gulf relations and the denial of all previous commitments,” the statement read.

Qatari citizens have 14 days to leave Bahraini territories while Qatari diplomats were given 48 hours to leave the country after being expelled. Meanwhile, Bahrain has also banned all of its citizens from visiting or residing in Qatar after the severance of ties.

Additionally, Bahrain has has closed both air and sea borders with Qatar.

Saudi Arabia then confirmed the same – cutting ties and shutting down all sea, airspace, and land crossings with Qatar as well as dissolving Qatar’s role in the Saudi-led coalition fighting against Yemen. Emirates, Etihad, Saudia, Gulf Air, and Egypt Air are no longer allowed to fly to Qatar and Saudi Arabia is providinhg facilities, services to Qatari pilgrims

Egypt then followed, confirming it was cutting diplomatic ties with

Then UAE confirmed it would cut ties, shut down all sky, water, and land crossings, and expel all Qataris within 48 hours.

The Maldives also just cut diplomatic ties with Qatar.

All of this happens within 24 hours of Iran calling out ‘The West’ for ignoring the real sponsors of terrorism around the world and UK’s Labor party leader outright name-shaming Sauid Arabia’s funding of terrorism.

Qatari officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

As a reminder, documents obtained by Middle East Eye show strategic alliance includes pledge by Ankara to protect Gulf state from external threats…

In December 2015, Turkey announced, to the surprise of many, that it planned to establish a military base in Qatar. Behind the scenes, the agreement was about forming a major strategic alliance.

After a 100-year hiatus, Turkey is militarily back in the Gulf and ramping up its presence overseas. In January, Ankara announced that it would also establish a military base in Somalia.

Specific details about the Qatar agreement, which Turkey described as an alliance in the face of “common enemies”, remain scant, but Middle East Eye has acquired copies of the agreements, as well as further details, which include a secret pledge by Ankara to protect Qatar from external threats.

Did Qatar just get scapegoated in the ‘war on terror’? One thing seems clear, support for a Syrian gas pipeline will be dwindling and with it the need for a Syrian war.

Notably, this raises further doubts about OPEC’s stability. As Bloomberg notes, while Middle East ructions have historically added risk premia to oil prices, discord here could theoretically put downward pressure on prices as OPEC members struggle to maintain unity and compliance on production cuts.

It looks like the GCC pond is getting ever smaller, and the crocodiles are starting to eat of each other …

This is an interesting and really unexpected development…… In theory one of the reasons of all this struggle is the competition between Qatar and Iran over the explotation of the gas-fields at sea between both and who will be first in connecting to Europe. With Qatar out of the ecuation all the argument goes smitheries.

dutchnational

After reports of the purported hack by ?? of UAE files, where framing of Qatar was found, one could expect something. However, this was very rapid.

Nice article.

One detail though : I am confused about the expected impact on Opec. Does Qatar have any oil? I thuoght is was only, like Israel, natural gas.

MeMadMax

From a fellow at ZeroHedge: What’s likely happening is Qatar has had to come to an agreement with Iran to supply their shared offshore gas reserve (North Dome/South Pars) to Indian and Chinese markets, and abandon the Syrian gas pipeline extension to Europe via Syria. Qatar and Iran are essentially producing out of the same massive offshore reserve in the Persian Gulf, and are competing on getting this gas to market.

Back in 2016, Qatar had purchased a 20% stake in Rosneft along with Glencore, so Qatar will get a piece of the profits from the Russian gas dominance in Europe. Qatar cutting a deal would allow Qatar access to Iranian terrestrial pipeline networks into Asia, although likely not at the profit levels they would like if they had full control of the pipeline networks.

Initially Qatar had planned a gas pipeline via Saudi and Syria en route to Europe, which was blocked by Syria back in 2012, and then Russia had officially entered the fray to defend their literal monopoly of the European gas market. Enter ISIS, a Saudi-Qatari-US-Israeli backed private military contractors to overthrow Assad, get a puppet President in who would grant construction rights for the Qatari pipeline. This brute force strategy using foreign backed PMC’s have utterly failed with Russian support.

From the other end, the United Slaves of Israel have blocked Iran from building a gas pipeline through the military campaigns in Iraq, thus closing the Meditteranean corridor for Iran. This has forced Iran to focus their attention on supplying the Asian market, most noteably China, who have been purchasing an increasing amount of oil and gas from Iran and Russia, and less and less from Saudi and the other gulf countries. China is doing this to try to force Saudi, Qatar, and the gulf monarchies to accept the Yuan for oil/gas payments instead of USD, and is putting the Gulf monarchies on a collision course with the United Slaves of Israel and threatening the Petrodollar mercantilism racket. Whenever the United Slaves of Israel dollar is threatened, a false flag ensues, and a major military campaign is executed. Iraq and Libya are perfect examples.

As a matter of financial survival, Qatar had to make a deal with Iran since Qatar has been boxed out of the European market directly, and Iran was the biggest obstacle in getting Qatar’s and other gulf monarchies oil and liquified natural gas to the two biggest markets in the region — India, and China.

Nice! Thanks for the background.

It’s dollar story again. I presume RU would be happy to divert Qatari and Iranian Gas to Asia and keep its monopoly over gas supplies in EU but there is still a problem with recently discovered gas field in South Mediterranean sea between Syrian coast and Cyprus. Trump’s refusal to join the climate change club is a tacit support for Big Oil over Big Gas because of the dollar. There is a tangible difference in carbon tax between crud oil and natural gas and gas has not been tied to US dollar. Egypt’s treachery has become fabulous. They have no oil of their own but they depend heavily of Saudi dollars for maintaining their army’s readiness which in turn has been supplied by US military industrial complex.

MeMadMax

Well, last we heard about the gas field off the syrian coast was that it was mortgaged out for russian weapons. Wether or not anything actually comes of it is up for debate. No, trumps rejection of the paris agreement has little impact on big oil(hell, they complained too). No, trumps visit to saudi arabia and the subsequent 3bil dollar arms deal is a 100% defacto move to keep the petrodollar going. Saudis hold all the keys in keeping the petro dollar going, they can literally turn it off with the click of a mouse and it would be all over… I dunno where you are going with the egypt thing. Egypt has in recent decades become its own whatever it wants and is not beholden to NATO but it maintains very strong ties to the united states, not saudi arabia….

John Mason

Egypt is anti Muslim Brotherhood and Qatar with Turkey fully support them. Egypt and Syria go back a long time in their fight against that terrorist group as does Iran.

John Mason

Sound assesment Max and totally agree.

Valery Grigoryev

Good analysis, bro!

Justin Ryan

Even though Qatar was a major backer of ISIS financially, I believe that after trumps trip to the Middle East has pushed these Middle East nations to push Qatar out of the inner circle and point the finger at them! Even though I believe Qatar to be as guilty as hell in its quest for a pipeline and backer of ISIS, I think that its “plan B” was reason enough to oust them. I have a feeling that Qatar saw the writing on the wall when it bought into Rosneft (along with Gelncore) and went ahead with a deal with Iran but what could also be happening is the other nations also nowsee the writing on the wall. I think its now obvious that Syria, Iran, Iraq and Russia are winning this war and I don’t think that the US backed SDF can stop the SAA from participating in Raqqa or rescuing. Deir Ezzoir. The best the US coalition can hope for is balkanisation of Syria and a buffer zone in its south so to not allow Iran a transit corridor to Syria and Lebanon. However, after the end of ISIS this would te away the US reason. To be there “to destroy Isis”! If they stayed it would simply be OCCUPATION as they have no legal grounds to be there in the first place. So if there will no longer be Qatari pipelines then there is no reason to be there. A complete and utter mess up by the USA again. The only thing I can foresee now s a proxy war between the SDF and the SAA but that would ally turkey with Syria. Turkey is leaning towards the Eurasian union now with its deal to be the turkstream gas hub from Russia to Southern Europe. Yet a much needed NATO ally.

Shit has certainly hit the fan! Russia’s intervention in this war. Has made all the difference and now we can see iraq, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, turkey and Russia all allying under common interests. But it ain’t over until the fat lady sings!

Amon -Ra- DeArmond

which is overall bad if you think about it,now Qatar will join the Shia coalition (Iran,Iraq,Syria) which will further strengthen Iran’s influence in the region ( a move the Saudis have been trying to stop),a Houthi victory in Yemen now will leave the Saudis in total panic mode as they slowly lose control over their own peninsula.

Rodney Loder

I think that the resource contracts are not the principal driver of this most recent fall out in GCC, only a few years ago Qatar was banned and only allowed back when the Brotherhood became defunct, BH. leadership was always a pipe dream put in place by the Mossad Britain and French connection, it was hoped to legitimately give the Sinai israle back to israel, – (which is in size almost a doubling of israel) – after a brief war with BH. imbeciles. Erdogan has learned from this experience and now as the article states is a leadership contender. One more piece of evidence that it’s political not economic is the situation in the Philippines, IS could be isolated by popular Muslim forces joining the Philippines Armed Forces, were talking thousands, but I’m not saying it will work there might be strong resentment of Christian rule, same as the Littoral States and Turkey (amazingly not mentioned in the article in connection with Qatar) it’s a case of not being cought on the losing side. If the West had to choose between KSA and Turkey it’s good by Salman the jew.

John Mason

More to this than meets the eye. US and UK vassal states have sacraficed Qatar. Qatar also wanted a healthy relationship with Iran so down came the orders from their masters to annex Qatar. Qatar also wants a closer relationship with Russia and with Iran could have been the “red line”. Expect regime change in Qatar.

zman

I think you are right on the money. This is after Trumpets visit where every terrorist in the world was declared to be from Iran. Qatar saw the writing on the wall vis a vis Syria and has had contact with the evil Iranians. That just doesn’t fit the terrorist scenario pushed by the west and their fellow terrorists. Time to rein in the straying flock…one way or another. Next will be a determination that they need to be invaded to thwart terrorism. It will get interesting if Turkey holds to it’s agreement to protect Qatar…not to mention if they decide to open up more to Iran.

Douglas Houck

Here is another take on what is happening. I’d believe the Muslim Brotherhood angle more than a pipeline angle. http://oilprice.com/Geopolitics/International/Clash-Between-Qatar-And-The-Saudis-Could-Threaten-OPEC-Deal.html

EU is Russia’s largest oil and gas customer, Turkey is No 2, taking away this business can hurt Russia.

Its cheaper to pipeline the gas than LNG, Qatar – Iran – Turkey – EU.

Douglas Houck

Yes, although it is not as simple as that.

Piped gas is cheaper to the buyer. Profit to the seller is independent of how the gas gets there. Qatar sells most all it’s gas as LNG and makes a lot of money. Much of Russia’s gas is sold through long term contracts so it can be hard for someone to enter into their market. Due to Europe wanting to diversify from Russian gas a few years back Russia entered into an agreement with China and is constructing the pipeline now. Japan is interested in having Russia pipe gas to them.

All of this is to say it’s not as straight forward as constructing a pipeline, followed by selling gas.

Thanks for your reply.

More

Douglas Houck Facts to consider:

When dealing with Neoconservatives blocking moves happen quickly.

There is plenty of time for the Qatar, Iran, Turkey pipeline to be built and a rolling 3 year or 7 year contract with Russia not to be renewed or extended.

Turkstream is proceeding very slowly. If it happens Turkey will have two Gas streams, more competition, lower prices.

Nordstream 2 is proceeding very slowly, Danish obstacles in play now.

Ukraine keeps raising its transit fees for Russian oil and gas to eventually make it uncompetitive in the EU or allow LNG to compete with Russian gas.

The Siberia to China pipeline construction is proceeding but very slowly, deal signed in 2014, now its 2017 maybe completed in 2020.

Russia – Japan pipeline has not been signed. It could be signed say in 2020, built by 2025.

Douglas Houck

Good points and I like the discussion.

Here are some counter facts.

Gas pipelines are very expensive with the majority of the cost being in the laying of the pipe.

For a pipeline to be economically advantageous it needs to be able to transport enough product over 20 years to pay for itself. This is why most of these pipelines are ~4 ft. in diameter. Further there needs to be 20 year contracts to both supply and receive the product.

There are many proposed pipelines but few get built, mostly because the buyer either doesn’t need that much product, or can find the needed product from another source. i.e., doesn’t want to sign a 20 year contract.

Yes, the other major reason is geopolitics.

The Iran-Pakistan (IP) pipeline is going nowhere as Pakistan says sanctions still prevent them from moving forward. https://timesofislamabad.com/iran-pakistan-gas-pipeline-project-status/2017/03/07/

Line D of the Central Asia-China pipeline network is indefinitely stopped due to lack of need on China’s part . http://thediplomat.com/2017/03/the-central-asia-china-gas-pipeline-network-line-dead/

Nord Stream 2 seems to be moving forward: https://www.rt.com/business/382934-russia-nord-stream2-eu/

Turkish Stream is under construction and should be completed by end of 2019. https://www.rt.com/business/387528-gazprom-turkish-stream-start-construction/ https://www.euractiv.com/section/global-europe/news/russian-pm-turkish-stream-can-enter-eu-via-bulgaria-or-greece/

The Siberia-China pipeline should be completed by 2018/9 even though it barely makes sense economically. http://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-silkroad-russia-pipelines-idUSKBN18819I https://www.rt.com/business/270352-russia-china-gas-pipeline/

Two major events (along with other issues) are influencing European natural gas and the various proposed pipelines; North Sea production is in decline and starting in 2006, Ukraine has shown to be a untrustworthy transit corridor.

As a result, Europe in the early 2010s took a long look at where they wanted to get their natural gas from. America pitched their LNG and made a big push under the Obama administration to be a major supplier. A number of east Central Asia countries, Iran, and Qatar made pitches for various pipelines.

At this time, Europe has made their decision and it is Russian gas. Russia has shown itself to be both a reliable supplier with lots of reserves and able to undercut the other proposed sources on price. Further, they have major agreements with both Germany, Italy and Turkey to supply gas. This has been advanced as President Trump has not shown any desire to change this (i.e., the neoconservatives are not in control).

Turkey gets the transit fee regardless of where the natural gas originates from and is therefore flexible on pipelines transiting through its borders.

The end of the Russian/Ukraine contract for transiting natural gas through Ukraine is 2018.

All of this is to say, that while I agree with you that geopolitics of energy always occurs, at this point in time most of it has been resolved. It is a major reason I get upset with all this craziness. If energy/russophobia were reasons for the Syrian war, that time has come and gone.

Qatar can not pipe any natural gas to China as the existing pipelines are full and nobody is building new ones (nor will they in the near term). They don’t have to as their LNG business is quite lucrative. The time for a pipeline to Europe was 2011 and it went nowhere.

The cut-off of diplomatic relations with Qatar has little to do with energy, and much more with ideology (Muslim Brotherhood). It’s obviously was a direct result of President Trumps trip to Saudi Arabia and his private discussions with the SA and Egypt. What exactly was said is unknown as The Donald can not trust anyone and so is doing foreign policy privately. It is a further breakdown of American Democracy as the Neocons/Liberal Hawks are willing to tear it all down to preserve their ideology.

Thanks for the discussion. It’s important to get all the views out on the table.

This is great news for Syria and Iraq. It means that Turkey and Qatar are breaking away from the axis of evil, racist supremacist Israel, Saudi Judea Arabia and the USSA. John Brown This is not a hit and run, its a long term Neoconservative project.

The Erdogan Coup d’etat was a false flag to get Turkey get into Russian orbit. Mossad can eliminate Erdogan very quickly if they want.

Qatar will now go into Iran / Turk orbit and propose the Qatar North Dome – Iran South Pars gas pipeline into Turkey.

John Brown

Well no Qatar wants to be part of the Iranian pipelines to China and India not Europe as those markets will be more than 4 times the size of the European market in 20 years and double in less then 10 years so your plan makes no economic sense at all fro Qatar. This is why Saudi Judea Arabia attacks Qatar as they fear losing those markets to Qatar, Iran etc and their racist supremacist Jewish masters fear losing their Jewish Federal Reserve dollar as other countries like Russia, Iran Qatar take Chinese Yuan for payment instead of worthless Jewish dollars, destroying the racist supremacist Jewish empire and its dreams of global domination and extermination of 90% of all Goyim and enslavement of any Goym left. As you will see, the court ruled that the Federal Reserve Banks are “independent, privately owned and locally controlled corporations”, and there is not sufficient “federal government control over ‘detailed physical performance’ and ‘day to day operation’” of the Federal Reserve Bank for it to be considered a federal agency: Lewis v. United States, 680 F.2d 1239 (1982) John L. Lewis, Plaintiff/Appellant, v. United States of America, Defendant/Appellee. No. 80-5905 United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit Submitted March 2, 1982. Decided April 19, 1982. As Amended June 24, 1982. Plaintiff, who was injured by vehicle owned and operated by a federal reserve bank, brought action alleging jurisdiction under the Federal Tort Claims Act. The United States District Court for the Central District of California, David W. Williams, J., dismissed holding that federal reserve bank was not a federal agency within meaning of Act and that the court therefore lacked subject-matter jurisdiction. Appeal was taken. One might say Jefferson Davis was the stooge puppet of Judah as Judah ran the military, the courts and international relations and the security services for the confederacy, the first Mossad and racist supremacist Jews controlled the banking system and the slave economy. https://www.civilwar.org/learn/biographies/judah-phillip-benjamin http://www.jta.org/2013/12/26/news-opinion/world/dutch-rabbi-confronts-jews-with-ancestors-complicity-in-slavery Jews Selling Blacks: Slave Sale Advertising by American Jews https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/12392db1db04b55b084d87cd907e2e19a7e25e74adf7ff532c7a676d87de65da.png https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqzDSrR4L4w

So, the oil price will rise?

Solomon Krupacek “…So, the oil price will rise?…”

Oil rose 1% on the news but has slipped down again.

Brent US$49 / WTI US$47 / Ural US$48

Oil in storage is at an oil time high and there is a world wide glut of oil so it will keep steadily declining towards US$45.

Probably the security arrangement with Turkey had something to do with Qatar’s shift toward Iran. It looks as if the sides are like this: Iran, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq, Qatar. They are supported by the superpower Russia. (China too but it doesn’t do much so it doesn’t really count.) The Indian Shiites support Iran but they are not active in the ME. On the other side are Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Jordan, Egypt and Libya. (Other North African states support S.A. but they aren’t that significant militarily.) The Saudi side is supported by Israel-USA axis (and the EU nations). Pakistan is mostly neutral but lately it is veering toward the Saudi side. And many ISIS people are recruited from Pakistan. Same with Afghanistan. It is neutral but many ISIS recruits come from Afghanistan. Other nations that are not in the Middle East but supply recruits to ISIS include Malaysia and Indonesia (they go to the Philippines to cause trouble). This is how the sides are shaking out. The Iranian side are politically well-educated. They are all Zionist-aware. They do not take part in jihads that target innocent people. They do not commit terrorist acts. They act peacefully unless attacked or defending themselves or allies. They are a minority of the people applying for refugee status overseas. They include oil-rich countries of Iran, Russia, Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Qatar. (Turkey and Lebanon do not have oil.) Turkey is in a strategic location, straddling Europe and Middle East. These nations have secular governments and have liberal attitudes towards many issues, such as women getting higher education. The Saudi side produces almost all the fanatics. This side is responsible for all of the terrorism. All the ISIS people are recruited from this side. This side do not like secular government much. Prefer to follow Sharia law. Have strict attitudes towards women. The majority of the people on this side produce the most of the refugees (including Syrian Muslims). The Saudi side are also oil-rich states: Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Libya, and Oman. Only Egypt and Jordan don’t have oil.
