Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud will visit the Syrian capital, Damascus, in the upcoming few days, Sputnik reported on February 16, citing a Syrian source with knowledge on the matter.
“Preparations are currently underway for the visit of Prince Faisal bin Farhan within days,” the source, whose name was not revealed, told the Russian news agency, without elaborating.
This would be the first visit by a senior Saudi official to Damascus since the war first broke out in Syria more than a decade ago. Saudi Arabia played a key role in financing and arming rebels early on in the war. However, the kingdom adopted a more pragmatic stance on Syria in later years despite pressure from the United States.
Between February 14 and 16, Saudi Arabia sent three aid shipments, including more than 100 tons of food and medical supplies, to government-held parts in northern Syria which were badly affected by the February 6 Turkish-Syrian earthquake. The humanitarian initiative broke the ice between Riyadh and Damascus.
In an interview with Bloomberg last January, the Saudi foreign minister said that countries in the Middle East should work together to find a “political solution” to the war in Syria..
“We are working with our partners to figure out a way to engage with the government in Damascus in a way that delivers tangible movements toward a political resolution,” bin Farhan said. “That’s going to take some work.”
After the interview, the Syrian daily Al-Watan revealed that the United Arab Emirates had been making efforts to fully restore Saudi-Syrian relations.
On February 12, UAE foreign minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan paid a visit to Damascus and met with President Bashar al-Assad. During a previous visit in January, Abdullah bin Zayed discussed the Saudi-Syrian rapprochement process with Assad, according to Al-Watan. Later, he sent a message to his Saudi counterpart.
Saudi Arabia could help Syria with some of its current economic and humanitarian problems. In return, Damascus could make efforts to ease tensions between the kingdom and Iran.
