On November 25, the Saudi-led coalition announced that its warplanes had carried out eight airstrikes on forces of the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in the central Yemeni province of Ma’rib.
In a statement shared by the Saudi Press Agency, the coalition claimed that its airstrikes had killed 60 Houthi fighters and destroyed five vehicles of the group.
“Our support helped the Yemeni military advance on the ground and contributed to the protection of civilians,” the statement reads.
The Houthis launched a large-scale attack to capture Ma’rib city and nearby oil fields some nine months ago. In the last few months, the group made significant gains. Houthi fighters reached the western outskirts of the city and secured positions close to its southern outskirts.
In an attempt to slow down or even stop the Houthis’ rapid advance in Ma’rib, the Saudi-led coalition stepped up its airstrikes on the province and other parts of Yemen.
On November 24, the coalition carried out two waves of airstrikes on the Houthi-held Yemeni capital, Sanaa. The first wave, which targeted an alleged drone factory of the Houthis, claimed the lives of two civilians. The second waves targeted alleged missile and drone workshops as well as ammunition depots of the group.
The Saudi-led coalition’s intense airstrikes are only provoking the Houthis, who don’t appear to be willing to halt their large-scale attack on Ma’rib city.
