Saudi-led Coalition Claims It Destroyed Four Booby-Trapped Boats In Yemen’s Al-Hudaydah

On May 26, the Saudi-led coalition announced that it had foiled an attempt by the Houthis (Ansar Allah) to launch an attack with booby-trapped boats on oil tankers in the Red Sea.

In a statement, the coalition said that it destroyed four remotely-controlled water-borne improvised explosive devices (WBIED) in the port of al-Salif in the western Yemeni province of al-Hudaydah while Houthi fighters were preparing them for the attack. According to the coalition, three Houthi military experts were killed.

This was not the first such claim by the Saudi-led coalition. A few days earlier, the coalition claimed that it had struck two WBIEDs of the Houthis off the coast of al-Hudaydah.

The Houthis used remotely-controlled WBIEDs, made with Iranian components, to target Saudi-led coalition warships as well as oil tankers in the past.

The Saudi-led coalition resumed its airstrikes on Houthi-held areas in Yemen early on March 26 in response to the March 25 Houthi missile and drone attack on Saudi Arabia.

In the early morning, the coalition carried out a series of airstrikes on different parts of al-Hudaydah and the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. The coalition’s airstrikes claimed the lives of eight civilians and wounded four others.

Following the airstrikes, the Saudi-led coalition accused the Houthis in two separate statements of storing weapons in al-Hudaydah port, al-Salif port, Sanaa International Aiport and in the district of Haddah in Sanaa city. The coalition vowed to attack these positions within a few hours if the Houthis didn’t remove the alleged weapons. A new wave of airstrikes on al-Hudaydah was reported following the coalition’s warning.

The Saudi-led coalition’s attempt to deter the Houthis may fire back. The group could launch larger attacks on Saudi Arabia.

Despite the current escalation, recent reports revealed that the Houthis are preparing to announce an initiative to launch talks with other parties in Yemen. The group’s initiative will be a response to a Saudi offer to host Yemeni peace talks.
