On July 30, the Saudi-led coalition announced that it had foiled a “drone attack” on a Saudi-owned merchant ship in the southern part of the Red Sea.
In a brief statement shared by the Saudi Press Agency, the coalition claimed that the attack was launched from Yemen by the Houthis (Ansar Allah).
“The Houthi militia, supported by Iran, continues to threaten shipping lines and global trade in the southern Red Sea … The efforts of the coalition contribute to securing the freedom of navigation and the safety of ships transiting the Bab al-Mandab Strait,” the statement reads.
The coalition did not provide any further details on the alleged drone attack. The targeted Saudi merchant ship is yet to be identified.
Earlier, the Israeli-operated MERCER STREET fuel tanker came under attack while it was sailing off the coast of Oman in the Arabian Sea. Two members of the tankers’ crew were killed in the attack, which was reportedly carried out with several drones. Some observers speculated that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the main backer of the Houthis, was behind the attack.
The Houthis, who attacked vessels in the Red Sea in the past, are yet to comment on the Saudi-led coalition’s claims. The attack attempt on the Saudi merchant ship may be linked to the earlier attack on MERCER STREET.

So the Houthis who were able to disable Saudi naval vessels have not been able to torch Saudi merchant vessels? Someone has muzzled the Houthis. Its advisers are making it fight with one arm tied around its back. Not going to win a war that way.
