Saudi-led Coalition, Houthis Renew Two-Month Ceasefire In Yemen

On June 2, Yemen’s warring parties agreed to renew a two-month ceasefire brokered by the UN just a few hours before its end.

“I would like to announce that the parties to the conflict have agreed to the United Nations’ proposal to renew the current truce in Yemen for two additional months,” the UN special envoy on Yemen, Hans Grundberg, said in a statement. “The extension of the truce comes into effect when the current truce period expires, today 2 June 2022 at 19:00 Yemen time (1600 GMT).”

Grundberg added the ceasefire was extended under the same terms as the previous one, which entered into effect on April 2.

Under the previous ceasefire agreement, the Houthis (Ansar Allah) suspended their military operations inside Yemen as well as their attacks on Saudi Arabia. From its side, the Saudi-led coalition halted its all of its operations in Yemen, including aerial attacks, and allowed fuel ships to enter al-Hudaydah port and select flights to land at Sanaa International Airport.

Several violations were reported by both the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition during the previous ceasefire. However, Yemen didn’t experience any major military actions and civilian casualties dropped significantly.

In his statement, Grundberg said that he will continue engaging with the parties to implement and consolidate all elements of the ceasefire in full as well as to push for a sustainable political settlement to the conflict in Yemen.

The new ceasefire will likely be as successful as the previous one. Both the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition do not appear to be interested in a new wave of escalation in Yemen. Despite this, a political settlement will not likely be reached any time soon.

Good luck with that UN brokered ceasefire. Their record isn’t good.

Personally, fuck the UN. They are warmongers pets.
