On November 9, the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) advanced in a pocket held by government forces on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River in the northeastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor.

According to Enab Baladi and several other Syrian news sources, SDF fighters advanced some 400 meters near Tabiyah in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside and established a number of defensive positions in the outskirts of the town.

Tabiyah is one of seven towns on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside that are held by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies.

While advancing near the town, SDF fighters didn’t face any resistance. The army and its allies abandoned the outskirts of Tabiyah back in 2018 after a heated battle with the SDF and the U.S.-led coalition. However, they maintained control over the town.

The SDF was reportedly forced to advance near Tabiyah because it fighters were recently expelled by angry farmers from a nearby area where they maintained a network of defenses for several years. Thus, the move was not directed against the SAA.

It’s worth noting that the U.S.-led coalition maintains a key base at the Conoco gas plant right next to the government-held pocket on the eastern bank of the Euphrates Rivers.

The SAA clashed with the SDF in Deir Ezzor and other parts of northeastern Syria on several occasions in the last few years. Nevertheless, recent Turkish threats to the region forced both sides to cooperate and coordinate more.
