SDF Built ‘International Court’ To Try ISIS Captives In Northeast Syria: Monitoring Group

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have built an “international court” to try ISIS captives in northeast Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on July 1.

According to the London-based monitoring group, the so-called “international court” was built in the eastern part of the border city of al-Qamishli in northern al-Hasakah.

The construction of court began two months ago upon direct orders from the U.S.-led coalition. The SOHR alleges that Western states, including the U.S. and France, provided the SDF with the needed support to build the facility.

“Dozens of ISIS operatives, of Syrian nationality, were tried according to the laws of the [SDF’s] self-administration and under the supervision of the coalition, it is still unclear if the trial took place within the new court or elsewhere,” the SOHR’s report reads.

The monitoring group said foreign ISIS terrorists will be soon tried in the “international court.” The SDF may establish a second court for that purpose in al-Hasakah city.

The SOHR’s claims are in line with a recent report by al-Monitor, which revealed that the SDF has taken the decision to try foreign ISIS terrorists in northeast Syria. The legality of this new court is highly-questionable as the SDF itself is an illegal armed entity.

This step is likely meant to save the face of Western states, that are not planning to take back their citizens who fought in the ranks of ISIS.
