The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have launched a counter-attack south of the border town of Tell Abyad in northern Raqqa, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on October 16.
“The SDF managed to advance and regain control of two positions it had lost to [Turkish-backed] factions in the past few hours,” the SOHR’s report read.
According to the London-based monitoring group, heavy clashes are currently taking place south of Tell Abyad. The two sides are also exchanging shelling.
Local sources said that the SDF has recaptured the town of Jadla, located less than 3km to the south of Tell Abyad’s town center.
Militants of the Turkish-backed National Syrian Army (NSA) captured Tell Abyad on October 13 in the framework of Operation Peace Spring. The capture of the town is one of their biggest achievements, so far.
The SDF’s counter-attack was likely facilitated by the deployment of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the town of Ain Issa, south of Tell Abyad. The army presence secured the Kurdish-led group supply lines.

Recapturing three kms south of Tell Abyad is a great achievement for SDF, so within easy reach of Turkish Artillery. It is unclear whether islamists captured the whole city of Tell Abyad. A few days ago they reported having all of Serekaniye too and now they are all gone. Soo….?

That would be a nice surprise. But Turkey has a large army with many 155mm artillery units. Don’t know why they would let the ammo supply get that low.
If Turkey does need more NATO spec ammo – there will always be a seller and a plausible deniability middleman – likely a Qatari to handle it. Turkey has been conduit for hundreds of thousands of tonnes of trafficked munitions into Syria, supplied by NATO and Gulf States, for nearly a decade – safe to assume Turkey has learnt a thing or two about the illicit munitions trade.

What is the SDF using to shell with and who did they get it from?
Seems the SAA.. But maybe SF means ATGM or recoilless rifles? When SF translates from their Russian sources often it is lost in translation.

They have some howitzers. Not many though. There are fotos of an artillery position where YPG forces are operating a howitzer near Bahguz.
They used a battalion of us marine artillery to flatten raqqah, so i would guess no.

SDF uses mostly Russian kit, probably Grad rockets and mortars left over from pre-regime control. They have been getting external funding for new kit but it is only small arms.
