The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are preparing to launch a military operation against ISIS in the province of Deir Ezzor, according to media speculations and reports by pro-SDF activists.
The SDF could launch the military operation “within several weeks” aimd the ongoing fighting for the city of Raqqah, Reuters reported citing, Ahmed Abu Khawla, head of the Deir Ezzor military council. [a part of the SDF]
“The operation to liberate Deir al-Zor will begin very, very soon,” Khawla said according to Reuters. The SDF commander added that his unit has already “entered Deir al-Zor [Deir Ezzor] territory and liberated several towns.”
According to the report, there were 4,000 fighters, mostly Arabs and mostly from Deir Ezzor, in the faction that Khawla heads. However, this number looks overestimated. The US has repatedly faced significant problems during its attempts to build an Arab faction of the SDF. Despite these attempts, Kurdish militias remain a core of the group.
SDF can only dream and speak presumptively as its master.

US position in Syria is not strong, I doubt Putin agreed on anything with US, since they cannot keep any agreements and its proxies are getting mauled badly. US is not winning anything in Syria, subsequently their bargaining position is weak.

Actually what USA can do is very limited, since they do not want to put boots on tjmeground in Syria in significant numbers. They have no bargaining position using gypsy proxy armies reinforced with a few hundred SOF. Russia has a lot more boots on the ground than US, with corresponding weaponry, unlike like footed US SOF. US’ proxies can be manipulated by regional players while one of them will be totally destroyed. Russia is testing a wide array of weapons in Syria, while US has some artilery units around Racca, therefore Russian foot print is larger and more powerful than the American footprint. SAA an allies are far more capable and much better equipped than the Kurds or ISIS, therefore the clear advantage on the battlefield is on the Russian and allies side.

The US is flailing everywhere and seem more like a drowned man trying to stay afloat. They are losing and have by all appearances have lost and why their allies told them to start focusing efforts back in Iraq or face withdrawal of support at the UN , which is still tenuous as to whether they will be charged with war crimes.

If in the past the SAA had allowed itself to be led by those fears it wouldn’t be where it is now. Instead it would have indulged in stretching the front lines with as a result an almost stalemate. It is the systematic approach that is increasingly driving the opposition forces to marginal areas.
But recently they seem to lose their focus. They are attacking simultaneously the now-pockets in East-Hama/Homs, east of Sukhnah, Humaymah, the Lebanese border and the al-Tanf area – not to mention rumors of even more fronts. Yet at the same time we see that for the first time in a very long time ISIS has been quite successful with some counterattacks. It suggests that the SAA is neglecting its defense. That will cost them – not only in territory and men but also in decreased morale. And that will damage their effectiveness in battle.
I don’t see the need for this fear about the SDF. The Syrian government has a route to Iraq. It has a presence in the city of Deir Ezzor. It may or may not win back the whole road from Deir Ezzor to the Iraqi border but even if it doesn’t it is in a good position for later negotiations with the SDF. The priority is now just to get rid of ISIS. That will put the Americans in Syria in the uncomfortable position that they no longer have a mission to stay there. And it will give the Syrian government a much stronger position to regards to the opposition in the West of the country.
It is anybody’s guess what will happen to the SDF and the Kurds in the long term. It depends to a large extent on external players like the US and Turkey. It also depends on how Iraq will deal with its Kurds. However, I don’t believe that whether they control al-Bukamal will make any difference.
