On August 18, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced that it had carried out three attacks on the Turkish military in response to recent strikes on northern and northeastern Syria.
The most recent wave of Turkish strikes on northern and northeastern Syria, which took place on August 16, claimed the lives of five SDF fighters, four soldiers of the Syrian Arab Army and a civilian.
In response to the strikes, SDF attacked three targets of the Turkish military on the border line near the Turkish cities of Karkamıs, Mardin and Urfa. The first target was a T-155 Fırtına 155 mm self-propelled howitzer, the second was a border post and the third was a BMC Vuran mine-resistant ambush protected vehicle. All three targets were struck with anti-tank guided missiles.
The SDF claimed that seven service members of the Turkish military, including one officer, were killed and at least three others were wounded as a result of the attacks.
“We affirm that retaliatory operations, within the framework of the legitimate right of defense, will continue against all attacks of the Turkish occupation,” the group said in a statement shared by the Hawar News Agency.
Earlier this month, the SDF carried out similar attacks. Nevertheless, it failed to deter the Turkish military and its proxies.
The SDF’s attacks are only provoking Turkey, whose military and proxies have been preparing to kick off a new large-scale operation for around two months now. Ankara will not likely abandon its plans.
